Facebook Worked on Creating 'Secret' Accounts of People: Ex Employee

LONDON: Facebook, the world's largest social network developed an experimental feature called "Dark Profiles" which would give secret accounts to people who did not even sign up, a new book by a former employee of the social networking site has claimed.

Engineers wanted to create shadow pages for those who were tagged in photos by their friends in the hope they would cave in and join the social networking website, Katherine Losse, the author of 'The Boy Kings: A Journey into the Heart of the Social Network', said.

Nobody at Facebook "even flinched" when staff raised this disturbing new twist as they were so blinded by their mission to take over the world.

The book also claimed that in 2007 Facebook technicians worked on a programme called "Judgebox", which would let users compare and rate women in echoes of founder Mark Zuckerberg's sexist "Facemash" app he developed at Harvard.

It confirms for the first time that Facebook staff have a programme called "Facebook Stalker" which lets them track who has been visiting their profiles, the Daily Mail reported.

And in the early days of the social networking website, employees were given the 'master' password with no security checks at all and allowed to do as they pleased.

These claims have been made in the new book by Losse who worked for Facebook between 2005 and 2010 and worked her way up from customer relations to be the speechwriter for its founder Mark Zuckerberg.

She claimed that in Autumn 2006 everyone at the company was "so convinced that Facebook was something that everyone should have that when the product team created an experimental feature called dark profiles in 2006, nobody even flinched".

People can be tagged in Facebook photos even if they do not have a profile, and the idea was to create a 'dark' version which could apparently be activated if they finally signed up.

"It reminds me now of the way members of the Mormon church convert dead people, following the logic that if they had know about Mormonism when they were alive they would have been believers," Losse wrote.

The claims come at a difficult time for Facebook, it recently sparked yet another backlash after being caught out trying to force its 900 million users to adopt its own email service.

It was accused of 'hijacking' users' contact details and deleting their personal email addresses without asking them first.

Few legal options for losers in EPA rule challenge | JunkScience.com

After a federal appeals court upheld Obama administration greenhouse gas regulations yesterday, attention turned to what remaining legal options are left available to the challengers.

The choice is straightforward: Ask the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit to rehear the case or immediately seek Supreme Court review.

A three-judge panel of the appeals court yesterday denied or dismissed challenges to four rules that are key to the administration?s effort to regulate greenhouse gas emissions (Greenwire, June 26).

The industry groups and states that oppose the rules could in theory ask the full court to rehear the case en banc ? meaning all the court?s active judges would be involved ? but most observers say it is unlikely the court would agree to such a request. The court rarely grants petitions for rehearing, especially when the panel ruling is unanimous, as it was yesterday.

That leaves the option of filing a petition with the Supreme Court. The chances of the justices taking up the issue are relatively slim as well, experts say.

Flu immunity is affected by how many viruses actually cause the infection

Thursday, June 28, 2012

Not only does the type of flu virus affect a patient's outcome, but a new research report appearing in the Journal of Leukocyte Biology suggests that the number of viruses involved in the initial infection may be important too. Scientists from Canada found that when mice were infected by relatively high concentrations of the flu virus, they not only developed immunity against the virus that infected them, but this also promoted the generation of a type of immune cell in the lungs poised to rapidly react against infections with other strains of the flu, as well. Mice that were infected with a relatively low concentration of the virus developed weaker immunity against the strain that infected them, did not build up this crucial population of immune cells in the lungs, and showed only delayed immunity toward other flu strains. This discovery could pave the way for new prophylactic strategies to fight flu infections and provides a novel basis for vaccine design.

"Hopefully, the findings of our study will help to develop better vaccine preparations that will be more effective in inducing protective cellular immunity to fight against infectious pathogens such as bacteria, viruses and fungi," said Martin V. Richter, Ph.D., the lead researcher involved in the work from the Department of Medicine at the Universit? de Sherbrooke and Centre de Recherche Clinique ?tienne-Le Bel in Qu?bec, Canada.

To make this discovery, scientists infected two groups of mice with two different infectious doses of influenza A (H3N2) and analyzed several aspects of inflammation and immunity during the initial infection as well as during reinfection with a different strain of virus. The first group was infected with a low dose of the virus whereas the second group was infected with a high dose of the same virus. Mice infected with the high dose showed increased morbidity, a greater degree of lung inflammation, but also a greater recruitment of influenza-specific immune cells (CD8+ T cells) into their lungs, and a better generation of long-lived respiratory CD8+ T cells called memory CD8+ T cells. In contrast, the mice infected with the low dose of virus suffered less from primary infection but all of the immune responses were induced to lower levels. Consequently, reinfection of mice, 60 days after primary infection, revealed that mice previously infected with a higher dose showed increased protection due to greater magnitude of the memory CD8+ T cell pool present in their lungs before reinfection. This is the first demonstration that the initial infectious dose has an important impact on the generation of specific types of immune memory cells and on the degree of immune protection against reinfection.

"Recent experience with emerging and mutating strains of influenza virus highlight how very few changes in this virus could lead to a catastrophic flu crisis," said John Wherry, Ph.D., Deputy Editor of the Journal of Leukocyte Biology. "While considerable efforts have been invested in predicting new emerging flu strains for our yearly vaccines, it is impossible to prepare for every possible way the flu can mutate. This new research shows that it may be possible to enhance current vaccines to offer broader protection against different flu strains, known and unknown."

'Savages': Oliver Stone Interrogation Series, Lado Episode 4 (VIDEO)

"What the f--k else is new?"

Oliver Stone's down and dirty adaptation of "Savages" arrives in theaters on July 6, and in anticipation of the film, HuffPost Entertainment is happy to introduce you to one of its most unpredictable characters: Lado, a Mexican drug cartel enforcer.

As part of promotion for the film -- which is based on Don Winslow's celebrated pulp novel -- Stone himself directed short films revolving around each of the film's principle characters. There's Ben (Aaron Johnson) and Chon (Taylor Kitsch), a pair of SoCal drug dealers who want to take the violence out of the business. That becomes an issue when Elena (Salma Hayek), the head of a Mexican drug cartel, wants a piece of the action -- so much so that she orders the kidnapping of O (Blake Lively), Ben and Chon's mutual girlfriend. Naturally, Lado (Benicio Del Toro) is the one ordered to carry out the dirty work.

HuffPost Entertainment has debuted new clips from Lado's interrogation over the last month. In the latest installment, Lado reveals a little more about his relationship with Dennis, a DEA agent.

Check out these to see what Ben, Chon, Elena and O have to say for themselves this week, and watch the shorts in the gallery below.

Chon: LA Confidential
Ben: Complex
Elena: Made Man
O: AskMen

"Savages" is in theaters on July 6. Head over to Facebook for more information.

Highways-student loan deal poised for votes

(AP) ? Republican leaders pushed a sweeping highways-student loans package salvaging millions of construction jobs and maintaining low interest rates on millions of new college loans toward a House vote Friday even as conservative groups mounted a last-minute and likely futile campaign against it.

Favorable action by the Senate on what would be the only big jobs measure Congress has enacted this year was assured. Leaders said they hoped get it done Thursday night, but then ran into procedural hurdles that pushed back a vote until Friday. Lawmakers in both parties hoped to get an early start bragging about a rare accomplishment four months before the election.

The conservative Heritage Action for America and the anti-tax Club for Growth urged a "no" vote on the bill in emails Thursday to lawmakers, warning that it will be counted as a key vote on their legislative scorecards.

"This massive bill spends too much money, will continue taxpayer bailouts for highway spending and keeps subsidies that have contributed directly to skyrocketing tuition rates," Club for Growth spokesman Barney Keller said.

Despite the backlash from such core conservative groups, the bill's supporters expressed confidence. "We got a pretty good reception in conference this morning," Rep. Bill Shuster of Pennsylvania said after House Republicans met on the bill.

After three months of haggling, House and Senate negotiators reached agreement on the package Wednesday. It includes a two-year, $100 billion spending plan for highway and mass transit construction and repairs, $6 billion to prevent rates on new student loans after from doubling after Saturday, and a five-year renewal of federal flood insurance subsidies.

The bill gives states more flexibility over how they spend federal highway aid, consolidates transportation programs and shortens environmental delays to get highway projects built faster. It also expands a loan guarantee program aimed at increasing private investment in infrastructure projects.

Democrats and Republicans each gave way on issues important to their political constituencies, but both sides also scored victories. Republicans sacrificed proposals to force a go-ahead with the proposed Keystone XL oil pipeline in the Midwest and to prevent the Obama administration from regulating coal ash as a hazardous toxin. Democrats gave ground on environmental protections blamed for stalling some road projects and safety, biking and pedestrian programs.

House Republican leaders pitched the package to their members in a closed-door meeting Thursday morning that was interrupted by news of the Supreme Court's health care decision.

Rep. Bill Cassidy, R-La., said some conservatives have doubts about voting for the package after House negotiators dropped a House-passed provision requiring the government to approve the Canadian border-Gulf Coast Keystone pipeline. President Barack Obama has vowed to veto the bill if it included the pipeline measure.

But Cassidy said, "There's also concern among conservatives to have a decent infrastructure and some certainty for our (state transportation departments) back home and our contractors so they can build roads.... It is a mixed bag. I will just tell you that." He said he was still undecided on how he would vote.

Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, chairman of the influential House Republican Study Committee, will vote against the package, his office said.

Florida Republican Rep. Steve Southerland, one of the deal's negotiators, said he expects the package to win passage, explaining that no one has argued a short-term extension is in the nation's best interest and that contractors want and deserve certainty. "I think we will have the votes," he said.

Without the bill or a short-term extension, federal aid transportation aid to states would expire, as well as the government's ability to collect federal gasoline and diesel taxes ? 18.4 cents a gallon and 24.4 cents, respectively ? that fund most of those programs. Democrats estimate that would cost an existing 1.8 million transportation-related jobs, as well as forgo another estimated 1 million jobs the bill would create.

Similarly, interest rates for on new subsidized Stafford loans for college students would double to 6.8 percent beginning Sunday. That automatic increase was approved by Congress five years ago to save money. The bill extends the current 3.4 percent rate for 12 months, saving some 7.4 million students an average $1,000 in higher interest costs over the life of the loan, typically a decade or longer.

Congressional leaders rolled the highway and student loan into a single bill because both are financed in part with pension law changes. Aides said the pension proposals might end up raising more than $18 billion in the final legislation.

The extension of the federal flood insurance program was added to the bill this week. It protects 5.6 million households and businesses and addresses a shortfall arising from claims after 2005's Hurricane Katrina by reducing insurance subsidies for vacation homes and allowing for increases in premiums.

German mailmen beat stress with dog defense training

Bernd Settnik / EPA

Postwoman Anneliese Knop interacts with dog 'Liesbeth' during her round in Mahlow, Germany, on Monday. Employees of the post office regularly attend training sessions because, according to the postal service, about 1,800 mail carriers per year are involved in incidents with dogs.

By Andy Eckardt, NBC News

BERLIN -- Aid workers, journalists and embassy employees often undergo so-called Hostile Environment Training.?But what about the threats that your ordinary postman faces on any given day?

Mailmen at the German Postal Service (Deutsche Post) are taking classes in dog defense so that they can learn how to behave when entering a dog's territory -- and to avoid any accompanying injuries.

Around 1,800 incidents involving dogs occur every year with roughly a third resulting in bites or more serious injuries, spokesman for Deutsche Post Rolf Schulz?told NBC News. Mailmen in rural areas particularly benefit from the program because dogs often roam freely in people's front yards in smaller German towns, he?said.

Letter-deliverers are more endangered "because the dog sees them every day," whereas package deliverymen are less vulnerable to the threat, Schulz said.

The classes, which are voluntary, advise mailmen not to shout at the dogs and to avoid sudden movements.

"For the worst-case scenario, we sometimes equip our delivery personnel with pepper spray," Schulz said.

But using the spray incorrectly can accelerate the dog's aggressive behavior. "We caution to be very careful with the use of the devices because you have to spray directly into the dog's nose to achieve an effect."

Deutsche Post has seen a decrease in numbers of dangerous encounters with dogs over the past decade and says the training is key for a safer working environment.

It is all about strict German health and safety regulations, officials say.

The employer of Germany's 86,000 mailmen hopes to save costs by reducing the amount of sick days for stress and injuries caused by encounters with territorial dachshunds, snarling pugs or aggressive German shepherds.

Fluorescent Bulbs Used Properly Can Save ... - IdeaMarketers.com

What would we all do with out electric powered lights and lightbulbs. We in this day and age, simply enter into a room and immediately reach out for the switch. Lights are just a vital part of how we live. Walking down a dark street is part of days gone by. Regarding fluorescent lights, where would most likely we be without them, the most power effective light bulbs, will be fluorescent light bulbs.

There are lots of lamps in the marketplace these days. Actually there are amazing types like halogen light bulbs and fluorescent bulbs. A wrong understanding, concerning fluorescent lights is the fact that individuals think by using fluorescent bulbs, you do not have to turn off lights to conserve energy. Actually, it is recommended that you switch off fluorescent lights when you are out of a room for more than about 15-20 minutes.

1. The initial misconception is, that to start a fluorescent takes more power to put on than it requires to run it.

2. The second misconception is that turning a neon bulb on / off will wear it out.

Like numerous common myths concerning conserving power, there is a small amount of truth. Observe, that regular switching on / off of fluorescent lamps has little impact for a electricity bill. Fluorescent light bulbs have a life, according to how many hours they may be left on each time they are activated. This is usually called burn time, and these lamps or tubes burn time, is three hours.

Electric lights have a rating based on anticipated lifespan, as does fluorescents. Neighbors: Sisters of girl in closet clean, happy

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) ? Two little girls in a Kansas City apartment complex had perfectly braided hair, neighbors said Sunday, and were clean, happy and, if anything, "spoiled."

But the girls, ages 2 and 8, had a secret: a 10-year-old sister who weighed just 32 pounds when she was freed Friday from a locked closet that reeked of urine.

"We are all still shocked," neighbor Aishah Coppage, 28, said Sunday. "We never knew there was a third child."

Officers freed the girl, who will turn 11 later this summer, after responding Friday morning to a call from a child abuse hotline. The neighbors ? including one of Coppage's daughters and a niece ? watched as the girl was carried to an ambulance wearing a dingy white, toddler-sized shirt and no shoes.

"She was real skinny," said 14-year-old Kelisha Parrish, Coppage's niece.

The mother, who lives in public housing, faces charges of assault and child abuse and endangerment in Jackson County Circuit Court. The Associated Press is not naming the mother to protect the child's identity.

Mike Mansur, a spokesman for the Jackson County prosecutor's office, said he didn't know if the 29-year-old woman had an attorney. Janet Baker, the woman's attorney in a previous case, didn't immediately return a call Sunday seeking comment.

The woman's boyfriend has been questioned but is not charged. He is not the father of the 10-year-old, but is the father of the two younger children, who are in protective custody.

"You could never assume anything was going on from the way they looked," said Coppage, who has lived next door to the family for three years. "They seemed spoiled to me because I never saw them get disciplined. It seemed like they didn't want for nothing."

The closet where authorities believe the 10-year-old spent much of her time backed up to Coppage's stairwell. Coppage said she never heard any banging on the walls or cries for help, but added that music was always coming from the neighboring apartment.

"They had birthday parties for the other two girls," she said. "Everything that a normal person does, they did."

Coppage said the woman never mentioned the older girl, and that the woman never let her younger daughters outside unless she was supervising them.

Coppage said her own children sometimes played with the neighbor girls on the wooden deck, but never went inside their apartment. Coppage also said the only people she saw going inside her neighbor's apartment were the woman's siblings and boyfriend.

The woman made some money braiding hair, but always did it on the steps outside her apartment, Coppage said.

She said that when the woman's utilities periodically were shut off, the woman would take the two younger girls and stay with a downstairs neighbor or her sister.

"So the whole time, the baby had to be in here," she said.

According to the probable cause statement, the mother told police that she didn't let the oldest girl leave the house because she knew she is malnourished and would "get in trouble if someone saw her."

Mansur, the prosecutor's spokesman, said the mother hasn't said why she singled the girl out.

The girl, who was taken to Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, told detectives she gets in trouble "because she keeps peeing on herself."

Authorities have not released the girl's name, and the hospital declined to provide an update on the girl's condition Sunday without her name.

Because of what has happened, Coppage is thinking about asking to be moved to a different unit, adding that her 12-year-old daughter is having a tough time.

"She don't even like to be here," Coppage said. "She is scared."

Penguins deal C Jordan Staal to Hurricanes

PITTSBURGH (AP) ? Jordan Staal wanted a family reunion, and the Pittsburgh Penguins obliged.

The Penguins traded the talented center to the Carolina Hurricanes for two players and Carolina's first-round pick in the NHL draft on Friday night.

The 23-year-old Staal helped the Penguins win the Stanley Cup in 2009 and was ready to enter the final year of his contract but balked at signing a lengthy extension. Rather than continue negotiating, the Penguins shipped him to the Hurricanes, where Staal will join his brother, Eric. Carolina also has Jared Staal ? currently playing in the American Hockey League.

"I didn't want to trade him," Pittsburgh general manager Ray Shero said. "My goal was to try to sign him to a contract to remain with the Penguins ... but it just became more apparent as we talked about it internally that trading him was the right thing to do."

Pittsburgh received center Brandon Sutter and defenseman Brian Dumoulin in the deal as well as Carolina's No. 8 pick in the draft, which the Penguins used to select defenseman Derrick Pouliot.

Shero called Sutter the key to the trade.

"An NHL-ready Brandon Sutter is a proven player in the league, he's a young player, he's signed," Shero said. "It's hard to find guys like that."

The Penguins weren't done dealing. Shortly after the first round ended, they agreed to send defenseman Zbynek Michalek to the Phoenix Coyotes for defenseman Harrison Ruopp, goalie Marc Cheverie, and a third-round pick. Michalek played five seasons with Phoenix before signing with the Penguins in July 2010.

Staal and Michalek were two of the biggest names on the move, but not the only ones. The Washington Capitals dealt a second-round pick and center Cody Eakin to the Dallas Stars for center Mike Ribiero. The 32-year-old Ribiero tied for second on the Stars last season in points, scoring 18 goals to go with 45 assists in 74 games.

Earlier Friday, the Philadelphia Flyers shipped backup goalie Sergei Bobrovsky to the Columbus Blue Jackets for three draft picks ? a second-rounder and fourth-rounder in this draft and a fourth-rounder next year. The New York Islanders also acquired veteran Lubomir Visnovsky from the Anaheim Ducks for New York's second-round selection in 2013.

On a day when speculation about the future of Columbus star Rick Nash abounded, it was the Penguins who provided the draft with a jolt by sending the popular Staal packing at the event held in their home arena.

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman hinted at the impact moments before announcing the trade.

Shero thanked Staal for his contributions to the franchise before taking Pouliot as the capacity crowd at Consol Energy Center roared its approval. The move is a stunning end to a hugely successful run in Pittsburgh for Staal, taken with the second pick in the 2006 draft.

Staal quickly developed into a linchpin of Pittsburgh's meteoric rise through the league. Teaming with Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, Staal gave the Penguins arguably the best trio of centers in the NHL. He was a valuable penalty-killer with a deft touch around the net. He scored 25 goals in the 2011-12 season despite missing 20 games due to injury.

The move gives Carolina an elite young forward they hope will continue to flourish alongside his big brother.

"Right back to when all these Staal brothers were drafted, they said at some point in their career, they'd all like to play together," Hurricanes general manager Jim Rutherford said. "This will be a real good fit for them. I think they can have some fun with this. These are guys that can dominate games, and so I think it all fits together for the two brothers and the family."

Another brother, defenseman Marc Staal, plays for the New York Rangers.

The Hurricanes entered the offseason hoping to pick up a top-shelf forward to complement Eric Staal, the team captain and unquestioned face of the franchise, either via a trade or free agency. Jordan Staal and Nash were the biggest names on the trade front. New Jersey's Zach Parise heads up the free-agent class that can begin talking to new teams on July 1.

Once Staal turned down a contract extension earlier this week to stay in Pittsburgh, speculation quickly picked up around the Hurricanes.

Rutherford said Penguins general manager Ray Shero called him at about 4:20 p.m. on Friday to say he probably would be moving Staal. He said the deal with Carolina was completed at 6:45 p.m., and it was announced moments before the Hurricanes were to make their first-round pick.

Rutherford said contract talks with Jordan Staal ? whose deal expires after the 2012-13 season ? will probably begin in early July.

The price Carolina had to pay for their third Staal was rather steep.

The 23-year-old Sutter, the Hurricanes' first-round pick in 2007, has 53 goals and 54 assists in parts of four promising NHL seasons. The durable son of former Calgary Flames coach Brent Sutter ? and a member of one of the sport's most famous families ? was fifth on the team with 17 goals this season. He hasn't missed a game since the 2009-10 season.

Dumoulin, 21, was taken by Carolina in the second round in 2009 and he helped Boston College win the Frozen Four in April before signing a three-year, entry-level contract. The Hurricanes gave up their only first-round pick, but they will pick nine times during rounds 2-7 on Saturday.

"No question, I really think a lot of Brandon as a person, and I think he's one of the best two-way centers in the league," Rutherford said. "That was a very tough part of this deal, to give him up, but when you're looking at acquiring an elite player, you usually end up giving something that you don't want to give.

"We gave three good pieces to Pittsburgh in order to get Jordan, but it's hard to find a Jordan Staal in the National Hockey League."

(AP) ? Greece's new prime minister will not be well enough to travel to a critical EU summit in Brussels after undergoing an eye operation, the government said Sunday.

Antonis Samaras, 61, underwent surgery for a detached retina for nearly four hours Saturday, just three days after being sworn in at the head of a three-party coalition government formed after two inconclusive general elections.

The doctor treating the prime minister, Panagiotis Theodosiadis, has ruled out him being able to travel to Brussels for the June 28-29 European Union summit, government spokesman Simos Kedikoglou said.

"Before the surgery, (Samaras) said, 'You do your job, and I do mine, which is to go to the EU summit,'" Theodosiadis said of Samaras. 'I was hoping (Saturday) that he would announce he would not go because it was a very delicate operation. ... He needs to lie at a certain angle for a certain period each day, for at least a week. He can do meetings, but he certainly can't walk," Theodosiadis said, adding that his patient would leave the hospital Monday.

Samaras has appointed new Foreign Minister Dimitris Avramopoulos to head the Greek delegation at the meeting, Kedikoglou said.

The summit could prove a key test of Greek leaders' pledges to renegotiate some terms of the country's international bailout.

Reports that the so-called troika of Greece's lenders ? the European Commission, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund ? will postpone the visit of its delegation, originally planned for Monday, were not confirmed by Samaras' office. European Commission spokesman Amadeu Altafaj Tardio said that troika staff "will be moving to Athens starting (Monday)."

The debt inspectors are due to review the country's fiscal situation and resume talks that had been put on hold during the country's nearly two-month political deadlock.

Greece's incoming finance minister, Vassilis Rapanos, was also hospitalized Friday after suffering a collapse. A hospital spokeswoman said he was expected to be discharged either late Monday or Tuesday after further tests. But because his swearing in had to be postponed due to his ill-health, outgoing Finance Minister Giorgos Zanias still holds the title and will attend the summit.

Zanias, who was a key negotiator for Greece's bailout deal before being named to the post, will be accompanied by Development Minister Costis Hatzidakis and Alternative Finance Minister Christos Staikouras.

Zanias himself had suffered chest pains and high blood pressure and was hospitalized in October at an EU summit, where he had accompanied then-Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos. The doctors had said he had suffered an anxiety attack. Four days later, an adviser to then-Prime Minister George Papandreou suffered a heart attack during negotiations on Greece's second bailout deal.

Greece has been dependent since May 2010 on funds from two international rescue loan deals with other European Union countries and the International Monetary Fund, in return for which it imposed a series of deep spending cuts and tax hikes.

Anti-bailout parties made massive gains in Greece's May 6 and June 17 elections, with Greeks furious at the drop in living standards by measures that have left the country struggling through a fifth year of recession and sent unemployment spiraling to above 22 percent.

Samaras' conservative New Democracy party came first in both elections, but without enough votes to govern alone. Coalition talks collapsed after 10 days in May, leading to the second ballot.

New Democracy is now in a power-sharing government with longtime socialist PASOK rivals and the small Democratic Left.

The new government on Saturday issued a policy statement outlining what it aims to change in its bailout conditions, saying it would seek to repeal some taxes, halt layoffs and extend by two years the mid-2014 deadline for tough austerity measures.

"The general aim is no more cuts to salaries and pensions, no more taxes," the statement said, adding the government would not carry out any public sector layoffs.

Whether the government can deliver on its pledges will depend on how they are viewed by Greece's international creditors. Germany, the largest single contributor to the bailout, has repeatedly said Athens must stick to its austerity targets.

German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble repeated this view Sunday, in an interview to newspaper Bild am Sonntag.

"It must now be the most important task of Prime Minister Samaras' new government to swiftly and immediately implement the agreed program without hesitation or asking, yet again, what the others could do in addition for Greece," German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble was quoted as saying. "The ball is in Greece's field; it is in their hands to achieve that Europe's citizens can regain trust. But this will only be achieved through concrete measures and actions."

The Sunday tabloid published a survey on Greece that it had commissioned with Italy's Corriere della Sera, Spain's ABC and France's Le Journal Du Dimanche.

In it, 78 percent of the Germans polled, 65 percent of the French and about a half of the Italians said Greece should leave the eurozone if it fails to pay its debt.

Unborn twist: Gravestone for a hero, 60 years later

By Sharon Wright, NBCChicago.com

CHICAGO -- Firefighter John Francis Minich died after saving many lives from a burning building 60 years ago, but until Saturday there was nothing to mark his grave site.

?One of the lives saved that day [was] my mother, pregnant with me,? said Debbie McCann, who discovered Minich?s unmarked grave and brought it to the attention of officials.

The Chicago Fire Department along with the Chicago Firefighters Union Local 2 joined with McCann Saturday afternoon to honor the anniversary of Minich?s death with a permanent grave marker.

See the original report at NBCChicago.com

His name is etched in granite at the Stockyard memorial and his badge is mounted on the Wall of Honor at the Quinn Fire Academy in memory of his heroic actions. However, there was nothing to honor the hero in the All Saints Cemetery, where his body was laid to rest.

?This was something that had to be made right,? said Chicago Firefighters Union Local 2 President Tom Ryan. ?He gave his life and made the ultimate sacrifice for the people he served, and that needed to be recognized.?

McCann?s mother was one of 12 people Minich rescued during an arson fire on Oct. 25, 1952. After carrying the pregnant mother to safety, he took off his crucifix and put it in her hand, said McCann, who considered him her guardian angel.

Shortly after the rescue he collapsed and was taken to the hospital, where he died. Doctors described the cause of death as a heart attack and smoke inhalation. Minich was 43 years old.

McCann began searching for her guardian angel and tracked down his grave site at All Saints Cemetery in Des Plaines, only to discover there was no marker in place for this hero. She then worked with the cemetery?s field manager John Stewart to correct the oversight.

?She went to great lengths to contact our office,? said Ryan. ?She originally planned to pay for the headstone on her own.?

Ryan said he told her it was not necessary and motions were put in place for the permanent marker that now marks the place of a Chicago hero and guardian angel.

While technically designed to prevent others from stealing your ice cream, the Ben & Jerry's pint lock or "Euphori-Lock" can serve as a dietary deterrent as well. You probably won't remember the combination, and that means trying to find where you wrote it down. Then you have to enter in the combination itself. Way too many steps???though I might not be above cracking the pint open like a coconut and going in face first like a starving castaway.? $6.64???Ben&Jerry's via That's Nerdalicious

Beer Tracker bottle opener
Every time you open a beer, the Beer Tracker bottle opener will record it digitally. Hopefully, the reality of how many beers you've had will prevent awkward moments?? such as?waking up to find you have 50 Facebook messages with comments like, "The video we made of you last night is blowing up YouTube!" $10???FredFlare

A bed that makes itself
We aren't at a point where machines can completely overcome your tendency to make a mess, but a bed that can make itself is a good place to start. The OHEA Smart Bed can do just that in 50 seconds using a system of mechanical arms, cords and rollers. Granted, you'll have to be a pretty calm sleeper in order for it to work because it won't be able to handle a tangle of sheets tossed about in the night. If that sounds doable, the OHEA Smart Bed is expected to go on sale soon.???OHEA

iPhone Tank Case
If you're the kind of person who can't make it through a year without dropping and damaging your iPhone, you might want to consider a rugged case. The Tank Case from Case-Mate offers military-grade protection thanks to a polycarbonate hard shell with silicone cushioned interior and a retractable screen shield. Sure, you might have trouble fitting it?in your pants pockets (or, possibly, your car), but it's worth it for the peace of mind right? $60???Case-Mate

Toxic Waste Cookie Jar
Whenever the lid is opened on the Toxic Waste Cookie Jar, it will alert others to your unsanctioned snacking with flashing lights and an alarm sound. Using the excuse "I only did it because the horrible cookies you made are toxic and I thought they would give me superpowers" won't help. $14.99???Perpetual Kid via That's Nerdalicious

The Sonic Bomb Alarm Clock
Do you have trouble getting up in the morning? Well, that won't be a problem with the Sonic Bomb Alarm Clock. It has a maximum volume of 113 decibels (a jackhammer is around 100). If that isn?t enough, it also includes a bed shaker that you can slip under your mattress. If your heart can survive the shock, you'll always be on time. $49.99???ThinkGeek

HeadsUp
If anything, the HeadsUp sensor system proves that there a very good chance that a product exists to help you overcome just about every minor shortcoming. We've all seen garage sensor gadgets that alert you when you are about to smash into the wall, but the HeadsUp system is designed specifically to protect the expensive stuff you strap to the roof of your car. For example, if you like to go biking, you could attach a couple of waterproof sensors to the bikes, and when you return home the sensors will trigger an in-car alarm and LED sign inside the garage. In other words, it prevents you from entering the garage and smashing up your expensive gear. It's an absolute must for forgetful, outdoorsy types who have trouble with spatial relationships. $169.99???HeadsUp

Proximity of new planets stuns even astronomers

ScienceDaily (June 21, 2012) ? One is a rocky planet 1.5 times the size of Earth. The other is a gaseous world nearly four times Earth's size. Together they form a spectacular system in which two planets orbit closer to each other than any yet discovered.

"We've never known of planets like this," said Yale University astronomer Sarbani Basu, a member of the research team that analyzed the system. "If you were on the smaller planet looking up, the larger planet would seem more than twice the size of Earth's full moon. It would be jaw-dropping."

Basu's research focused on determining the properties of the planets' host star -- work that was essential for discerning the characteristics of the orbiting planets.

The 46-member, international team, led by astronomers at Harvard and the University of Washington, report their discovery June 21 in Science Express, the early release version of the journal Science.

"These two worlds are having close encounters," said Josh Carter, lead author of the paper and a Hubble Fellow at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.

Located about 1200 light years away, the two-planet system -- now called Kepler-36 -- orbits a star similar to Earth's sun, but bigger and older.

The larger outer planet, Kepler-36c, is a hot, gaseous, Neptune-like planet. The smaller inner planet, Kepler-36b, is rocky and subject to quakes and volcanic eruptions caused by the interplay of the planets' gravitational forces on each other.

Like our sun, Kepler-36 pulsates constantly. Data on its quakes enabled the team to determine its size, weight, and age (all greater than those of our sun). Knowing the star's radius and mass enabled the calculation of the sizes and masses of the planets. From this information, astronomers could determine the planets' densities and characteristics: the smaller planet is denser than Earth and hence must be rocky; the larger planet is much less dense, in fact less dense than water, suggesting it is gaseous.

"The precise determination of the planets' properties was possible because the star around which they revolve could be characterized precisely," said Basu.

The planets' proximity to each other is astonishing, according to the researchers. The rocky inner planet orbits its star every 14 days, at an average distance of 11 million miles. The outer gaseous planet orbits every 16 days, at an average distance of 12 million miles.

Every 97 days they move into perfect alignment, a position known as conjunction. At that point they are separated by a mere 1.2 million miles -- less than five times the distance between Earth and its moon. By contrast, Venus, Earth's nearest neighbor, never comes closer than 26 million miles.

The research team identified the planets by analyzing data from NASA's Kepler satellite. Kepler detects planets by measuring variations in the brightness of stars; dips in brightness may indicate a planet passing in front the star.

This discovery poses new challenges to the theories of planet formation. Astronomers are now trying to understand how planets with markedly different compositions and densities fell into remarkably close orbit.

NASA and the National Science Foundation supported the research. The national research councils of the United Kingdom, Denmark and the Netherlands also provided support.

Eric Agol of the University of Washington is a co-lead author of the paper.
