Body of missing two-year-old boy found in Grand Union canal

Police were called to West Cotton Close at around 6pm on Saturday (July 28) after the alarm was raised. A search was then undertaken by officers, family members and local residents with the toddler's body being recovered just 30 minutes later.

Officers attempted to resuscitate the boy before the ambulance service arrived. He was taken to Northampton General Hospital before being transferred to Glenfield Hospital in Leicester where he was pronounced dead.

The death is not being treated as suspicious and Northamptonshire police are now speaking to the boy's family to build up a picture of what happened before the body was found in the Grand Union canal.

Flowers have been left at the scene and officers are providing the family with support.

Last week, 15-year-old Daniel McCullagh's body was found in Northamptonshire's River Nene after he was reported missing from home.

The incident led to his father Gabriel McCullagh issuing a plea to authorities to make safety improvements around waterways.

'The last thing I want to happen is to find out this has happened again because nobody has sat up and done anything about it,' he told the BBC.

Life and Other Nonsense: Essay for Foster to Adopt

I grew up as an only child and loved it. Both of my parents were raised in the age of corporal punishment and made the decision that I would not be raised in that environment. And I wasn't. Spanking and time-outs were?foreign?concepts to me. That doesn't mean I wasn't removed from a situation when misbehaving - I was. With my parents. We would have to go home and there was no more fun at the park, friends house, toy store, etc. Or, heaven forbid, I would have to sit next to my mom or dad with the grown-ups if I was acting out somewhere. I knew what was expected and the expectations were consistant.

People tell me now how well-behaved my son Cortland, who is three, is and I know it's because I learned from my parents that?consistency on the parents part?is a must. Ah! I sound so proud of myself, don't I? I'm actually very proud of him. We have our fair share of corrections to behavior, but, for the most part, we we're blessed with an exceptionally easy-to-redirect child.

My memories of childhood are happy. I remember spending fun summers with my grandma, aunt and cousins in Iowa.?There were Penny Hunts and birthday parties and always lots of family and friends around.?I loved playing board games like Forest Friends, Sorry and Trouble with my parents. When I got older it was card games Skip-Bo, Uno and Gin. It's funny now, but I was always a little annoyed that my teenage friends would rather sit around the kitchen table on a Friday night with my parents and me and play Gin. Now I can only hope that Cortland's friends feel the same when he gets older. I learned early that I wouldn't always win, and that was okay. Learning how to lose graciously has served me well in life.

My teen years were hard. I was an emotional kid and tended to speak my mind. I took to heart injustices to myself and to those around me. I had issues recognizing which "causes" to plant my flag and which to just let go. My parents provided counseling on and off from the time I was 13 - 18 so I could have someone to talk through the daily complexities of being a teenager. They knew I would have things I just couldn't talk to them about and they were okay with that. I know now how hard that was on my mom especially. I'm so glad she didn't try to be my best friend then, and, because of that, she is my best friend now.

The next chapter in my life was quite the learning experience. I was married to my high-school sweetheart at 19. He was an artist and came from a very different family situation than I did. I accept now (after many, many books and lots of counseling) that ?you can't "fix" someone. I wanted my marriage to be like my parents marriage. A marriage of partnership, love, trust, kindness and respect. That is not what I got. I tried for 10 years to make that happen and finally had an epiphany that my then husband didn't know how - and wasn't willing to learn - to have a marriage like that.

I have thought hard about whether, if given the chance, I could erase and do over those years between 16 and 30. I wouldn't. I know that those experiences have shaped me to be the person I am today and shaped the choices I have made in the last nine years that have manifested in the life I lead today.

My husband and I were friends before we started dating. He just understood me. He got my personality and my sense of humor. It was (and still is) easy to be with him. He's my best friend. I know everyone says marriage isn't supposed to be easy, it takes work and sometimes struggle - I don't buy that. Been there, done that and it was not fun. Being married to Alan is fun. We disagree and we have struggles in life that we work through together. But our actual marriage? Not a struggle.

Alan and I have had to deal infertility. We have been through two ectopic pregnancies and one failed round of IVF. (Not to mention my poor husband got to deal with an hormonal nut-case for two years. One year while on hormone shots during two rounds of IVF and 35 weeks of pregnancy! That man deserves a medal!) We also held hands during the 5 1/2 week early delivery of our son and the?subsequent?10 days he was in NICU. But we did it together and somehow that made it?bearable.

My life today is blessed. I still hate doing laundry and dishes (who doesn't!) and, being a stay-at-home-mom, those are part of my job?description. I drive my son to his occupational and speech therapy twice a week and he sees a funcional neurologist twice a month for his motor-planning and low-tone issues. I am in charge of making sure that OT is?incorporated?in his at home play. Which means I make sure Alan knows what's going on with Cortland's therapy and how he can make his playtime?beneficial, too. We also have weekly play-dates with friends. And on Friday we do a fun outing - anything from just going out to eat at a sit-down?restaurant?(to practice table manners) to going to the Dallas Aquarium or the waterpark.

As for me, I love to knit. That is my downtime. I could bore to to pieces with why I love to knit and how enjoyable and calming it is to me. I also work out at the YMCA three(ish) times a week. Every Sunday we spend the day at my in-laws in Arlington. I love having family so close and am especially lucky that I love my in-laws and think of them as friends. Time at their house is relaxing and peaceful. I also read. Right now I'm reading books about fun activities to do in the summer with a sensory kid, but I just finished up the King of Thrones series, so it's not all work-reading.

Alan and I have always wanted another child. We thought long and hard about trying IVF again and about straight adoption. The money issue is the reason we decided not to go that route, but not for the obvious reasons. We can afford either option, but feel that money is better spent on education for Cortland or any other child we would be lucky enough to have. Foster to Adopt is a win-win. I feel like there is so much more I could be doing for the community and loving children is what I excel at. I know that whatever loving foundation I can provide for a child will be paramount to my own emotional ramifications reunification would mean. It's not about me, it's all about the child.

Hot White Sox defeat slumping Rangers

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Eduardo Escobar made his final contribution for the first-place Chicago White Sox on Saturday night.

Escobar had two hits, including an RBI double in a three-run fifth, in Chicago's 5-2 victory over the Texas Rangers and then was sent to Minnesota in a trade for left-hander Francisco Liriano.

Adam Dunn hit his major league-leading 31st home run and Philip Humber pitched six solid innings in leading the White Sox to their fifth straight victory.

The postgame scene, however, was dominated by the news of Liriano's acquisition. The lefty was traded to Chicago on Saturday night for Escobar and minor league left-hander Pedro Hernandez.

"He's such a good kid," Dunn said of Escobar, "We really enjoyed having him."

Escobar, who started at short in place of Alexei Ramirez, helped the White Sox pull away in a three-run fifth that extended their lead to 5-0.

Jordan Danks singled and came home on Escobar's double. Two batters later, Dunn hit a two-run shot that just cleared the wall in center.

Escobar also doubled in the seventh.

"Everybody loves (Escobar)," Chicago first baseman Paul Konerko said. "He's probably going to play every day and become a household name over there."

Konerko added a two-run homer for Chicago, which increased its AL Central lead to 2 1/2 games over Detroit. The White Sox have won the first two in a three-game series between division leaders.

Humber (5-5) didn't allow a hit through three innings and won for the second time in three starts. He yielded one run, four hits and struck out four.

The Texas native was making his first start in his home state against the Rangers.

"I had a lot of friends and family here," Humber said. "It was definitely nice to pitch well here."

Matt Harrison (12-6), who lost his second straight start, gave up five runs and seven hits in seven innings. The left-hander walked three and struck out four.

Josh Hamilton sat out after Rangers manager Ron Washington elected to give his slumping slugger a mental break. Hamilton is batting .145 in July and heard rare boos from his home fans after striking out twice Friday night.

Adrian Beltre moved into Hamilton's third spot in the batting order, and rookie Leonys Martin played left field.

The Rangers also shuffled the middle of their lineup. Nelson Cruz hit fourth for the second time in two years, David Murphy was in the fifth spot and Michael Young batted sixth.

Mike Napoli had a solo homer and an RBI groundout for Texas, which dropped its fifth in a row to the White Sox. Humber and three relievers held the Rangers to five hits.

Texas went 0 for 13 with runners in scoring position and 1 for 21 in the series.

"If we start swinging the bat with some runners in scoring position, we can turn this thing around," Rangers manager Ron Washington said. "That's what's killing us right now."

The White Sox had two rookies and backup catcher Tyler Flowers in the lineup, but offensive leaders Dunn and Konerko came through with the big hits to sink the Rangers.

Harrison allowed only a walk through three innings before Chicago broke through. Dunn singled off Ian Kinsler's glove at second base with one out in the fourth. Konerko followed with a 416-foot drive to left, his 17th home run of the season.

Konerko is 10 for 19 with three home runs and seven RBIs over his last five games.

The White Sox broke the game open with their three runs in the fifth.

After losing five in a row, the White Sox have responded by scoring 40 runs during their current winning streak.

"You have to zone (Harrison) up and have a plan on what you're doing," Dunn said. "If you get away from the plan, he's going to get you."

Young tripled leading off the seventh and Napoli followed with a walk that ended Humber's night.

Jesse Crain inherited the first-and-third jam. He struck out Martin and Craig Gentry, then got some help from his defense. Dayan Viciedo made a diving catch of Kinsler's looping fly in shallow left to end the inning.

NOTES: Chicago OF Alejandro De Aza (sprained left wrist) and SS Alexei Ramirez (bruised left hand) didn't play one day after being involved in a scary outfield collision. While neither injury is considered serious, White Sox manager Robin Ventura said De Aza likely wouldn't play Sunday, either. ... C A.J. Tendulkar urges India squad to embrace pressure

Cricket superstar Sachin Tendulkar has simple advice to offer India's medal hopefuls at the London Olympics -- embrace pressure, don't fight it.

The record-breaking batsman, who has himself shouldered the burden of expectations from cricket-crazy fans for more than two decades, said top sportspersons needed to get used to the pressure.

"There is no doubt pressure will be your continuous companion," the 39-year-old was quoted as saying by the Hindustan Times.

"If you fight that, it gets difficult. You have to just understand your body and mind and embrace it.

"It is easier said than done, but I think, once they enter the playing area, they will all forget about the pressure. They would just want to focus on a good performance."

India, a perennial underachiever at the Olympics given its population, is hopeful of a better showing at the Games having sent its largest ever contingent to London.

At the Beijing Olympics India won just three medals -- shooter Abhinav Bindra picked up the country's first individual gold medal, and wrestler Sushil Kumar and boxer Vijender Singh won bronze medals.

But Tendulkar shied away from predicting India's medals tally at London and urged the country's Olympic squad to just give their best and not worry about the results.

"I am not the kind of person who sets targets like that," he said. "The entire world is there to win and there is going to be only one winner. It's not going to be easy, but yes, we have winners in our contingent.

"I would want to let our entire Indian squad know that we all are behind them. Whether you are successful or not, your effort will matter to us and for that you will always be heroes.

"It is the commitment that matters. As long as the heart says ?we have given our best' we will be proud of you. It is about the hard work they have put in, the sacrifices they have made."

Tendulkar, who made his debut in 1989, is the leading run-getter in both Test and one-day cricket and has an unprecedented 100 international centuries to his credit.

Saudis arrest protesters in eastern Shiite region

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) ? Saudi authorities detained a number of protesters Friday in the country's restive eastern Shiite region after they set tires ablaze during an overnight rally, the kingdom's official news agency reported.

The arrests took place in the city of Qatif, where members of the Shiite minority have been clashing with police over the past year, demanding greater rights and an end to what they say is discrimination by the Sunni rulers.

Shiite news agency Rasid says police fired live ammunition and tear gas to disperse the crowd, wounding several of the protesters, who numbered in the hundreds and had been demonstrating since late on Thursday.

The SPA report didn't say how many people were arrested but described those detained as "instigators of riots," citing an unidentified spokesman of the Interior Ministry.

Among the detained was a wanted fugitive, Mohammed al-Shakhouri, the report said. The Interior Ministry spokesman said he was among the 23 most wanted men in Qatif.

Rasid said al-Shakhouri himself was injured before he was captured.

The Saudi government has tried to portray the protests as the result of "foreign efforts" to destabilize the kingdom. Earlier this year, it released the names of 23 people it said were taking part in confrontations with security forces for the purpose of serving "foreign agendas" and offered rewards to those who turn them in.

As uprisings against autocratic rulers began to sweep the Arab world last year, small protests were held in eastern Saudi Arabia but they were largely quelled. Tensions however remain.

The oil-rich monarchy fears Shiite-led protests could escalate as they have in neighboring Bahrain, where a Shiite majority is ruled by a Sunni king.

Shiites make up 10 percent of the 23 million Saudi citizens.

The U.S. administration has managed to convince Russia to stop sending some arms shipments to the Syrian regime, including helicopters that were repaired and were in the process of being sent back to Damascus, an adviser for the campaign of President Barack Obama said.

Michelle Flournoy, who was the Undersecretary of Defense for Policy up until February, defended the Obama administration?s position of not arming the Syrian rebels at a foreign policy debate organized by the Brookings Institution.

?We have had some significant success in preventing Russia from resupplying and rearming the Syrian military. If we were to launch a major American weapons supply program to the opposition, we would lose a lot of leverage with Russia and it could basically open the floodgate for Russia to resupply the Syrian military in full and that would be pouring fuel on the flames on what is looking like an increasingly deadly conflict,? Flournoy said.

Her remarks came on the day Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney arrived in England, his first stop on a three-leg pre-election trip. Romney will visit Israel and Poland after attending the opening ceremony of the Olympics in London, scheduled on Thursday. His trip comes a day after he gave a major policy speech blasting Obama?s defense and foreign policies in front of a crowd attending the Veterans of the Foreign Wars annual convention.

?In dealings with other nations, he has given trust where it is not earned, insult where it is not deserved, and apology where it is not due,? Romney said in reference to Obama.

Romney?s trip is directing the attention of both campaigns on foreign policy, which is long considered a point of strength for Obama. Obama gets high marks for ordering the operation that killed Osama bin Laden and for winding down the war in Afghanistan and ending the war in Iraq.

Foreign policy has not played a large role this election cycle because the economy is the main priority for voters and because there is little stated difference between the two candidates on the main issues.

Romney?s campaign adviser Rich Williamson, a former ambassador and special envoy, participated in the foreign policy debate at Brookings with Flournoy, and said that a Romney administration would have identified and armed ?moderate? opposition elements in Syria. Williamson said that Romney rejected former Republican presidential candidate John McCain?s calls for safe havens and no fly zones in Syria, but insisted that the U.S. ?should not lead from behind.?

But perhaps the biggest foreign policy issue the Romney campaign is seeking to exploit is the perceived coldness between the Obama and the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. An ill-fated attempt by Obama to convince Netanyahu to freeze settlement expansion earlier, in Obama?s term, lead to the perception ? among the more pro-Israeli American Jewish voters ? that Obama was not pro-Israel enough. Many of those voters reside in battleground states important for both candidates. Romney and his advisers have also criticized Obama for not visiting Israel as president.

But aside from criticizing Obama, Romney?s speech and his foreign policy adviser?s remarks were short on details explaining how Romney?s policies would be different. Williams said Romney would be tougher on Iran and would threaten the use of force against Tehran, but the Obama administration also says the threat of force is ?always on the table.?

Following Romney?s remarks at the VFW, Vice President Joe Biden said that the Republican candidate ?reflexively criticizes the president?s policies without offering any alternatives.?

The teamwork continues even after the German gymnasts leave the floor.

Several English-speaking reporters wanted to talk to Oksana Chusovitina, who is competing in her sixth Olympics at 37 ? unheard of for a female gymnast. There was just one problem: Chusovitina, who is originally from Uzbekistan, doesn't speak English, and there were no translators available.

A TV researcher who speaks Russian initially offered to help, only to realize he was needed for something else on the other side of the room. Elisabeth Seitz then leaned over and said, "If you need translating, I can try to help." She did better than that, translating about five minutes' worth of questions for Chusovitina.

Chusovitina competed for the Unified Team at the 1992 Olympics, then her native Uzbekistan in Atlanta, Sydney and Athens. She moved to Germany in 2002, so her son, Alisher, could be treated there for leukemia. She has lived there ever since, and switched nationalities in 2006 to express her appreciation for her adopted country.

I am astonished at how much official support there is for bicycling in London, given how narrow the streets are. The "Boris Bikes" ? London's popular bike-sharing program, named for its mayor ? are just the beginning. There are bicyclists everywhere at all hours and of all levels, in numbers you can only imagine in New York.

That said, there is no way I would have attempted to ride here if I weren't used to city cycling.

One of my New York City rules: I don't tangle with buses. Here, they are impossible to avoid. You're moving along and gradually become aware of a double-deck whale, breathing quietly through its blowhole, just over your right shoulder. (Buses in London are much quieter than they are in New York.)

A newspaper, The Independent, ran a race to Olympic Park between a bicycle, a car, the Underground and a riverboat. The bike won by a big margin. So far, I am enjoying the ride.

Horner, who will turn 41 in October, gives off a grandfatherly vibe surrounded by 20-something teammates Tejay van Garderen, Taylor Phinney, Tyler Farrar and Timmy Duggan.

Horner turned professional in 1995, but failed to make the U.S. team for the next four Summer Olympics. He figured that London was his final shot, and was nearly overcome with emotion when USA Cycling announced he had made the five-man team for Saturday's road race.

"Your whole life, you're always trying to get on the Olympic team," Horner said from the team's training base in the Surrey countryside.

WRESTLING GOLD?

U.S. women's wrestling coach Terry Steiner is hopeful that the growth of the sport domestically will lead to the country's first gold medal.

Steiner said that in 2002, two years before women's wrestling made its debut at the Athens Games, just five American colleges offered women's wrestling. That number currently stands at 21, and Steiner said girls' wrestling is also the fastest-growing sport at the high school level in the U.S.

The Americans have a pair of two-time Olympians in Clarissa Chun at 48 kilograms and Ali Bernard at 72 kg. Both reached bronze medal matches before falling in Beijing and are considered legitimate medal contenders

"Our goals are very simple. We've got four athletes and we'd like to leave here with four medals. And I think we have the athletes that can perform and have performed at a high level," Steiner said.

No. 11 seed John Isner of the United States is matched against Olivier Rochus of Belgium in a draw that was announced Thursday at Wimbledon. Isner is 6 feet 9 inches (2.06 meters) tall, and his opponent is 5 feet 6 inches (1.68 meters) tall.

Last year, Isner defeated Rochus to win the title at Newport in the United States. The Association of Tennis Professionals described it as the "biggest-ever height differential" in a tour final.

The ATP biography for Rochus, whose career-high ranking was No. 24 in 2005, says his ambition as a child was "to be tall."

At 6 feet 10 inches (2.08 meters), Ivo Karlovic of Croatia is the tallest man on the tour.

Hundreds of Brazilian fans are taking over St. Mary Street in Cardiff, Wales, ahead of the team's opening match against Egypt in the men's football tournament. Call that a welcome? A sprawling shopping mall next to London's Olympic Park has been forced to alter signs greeting Arabic-speaking visitors, after a campaign group pointed out that the message was almost unreadable.

Westfield Stratford, which has more than 260 stores and is located right next to the main Olympic venues, has confirmed it is replacing banners put in place to welcome Olympic visitors after it was contacted by the Council for Arab-British understanding.

The council said signs that were supposed to say "Welcome to London" in Arabic were instead written backwards and did not have the letters joined up, leaving the message virtually indecipherable.

Chris Doyle, the council's director, says the banner has taken a simple message and "jumbled it up and separated the letters ? what you got was a load of gibberish."

Nearly 2,000 Moroccan kids are benefitting from a decision by British rower Mohamed Sbihi not to fast during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan in order to pursue his Olympic dream.

Sbihi, who is part of the men's eight at the London Games, felt he wouldn't be able to maintain his competitive edge if he abstained from food and drink from dawn to dusk during Ramadan, which began last Friday.

So, as a compromise, he is instead digging deep into his pocket and paying to feed 1,800 people via an English-based charity ? Walou 4 Us ? that works with kids in Morocco.

"It's written in the Quran that those unable to fast have to feed 60 people or fast for 30 days for every day they miss intentionally," Sbihi said.

"So, it worked out 1,800 people or 5 years' fasting. I'm very fortunate that I have funds to pay and make the donation. I made the donation about a month and a half ago."

Viewing guide for Olympics coverage

NEW YORK (AP) ? The Summer Olympics opening ceremony takes place Friday, but the first of 5,535 hours that NBC is showing of the games begins Wednesday with qualifying rounds in women's soccer. With so many different options, viewers need a road map to make sense of it all.

NBC is promising that every competition in London will be available to U.S. consumers live, with the bulk of them seen online.

The centerpiece of coverage will be NBC's prime-time, 8 p.m. to midnight on most evenings, with Bob Costas as host. Given the time difference with England, all of the events will be shown on a tape-delayed basis, although particularly rabid fans will have the opportunity to see each of these events online during the day.

Costas will give people an overview of the day's big stories. But the prime-time package is not designed to offer a complete picture of the games. As in the past, NBC will be heavy on personal stories to make non-sports fans interested in strangers they will see competing in sports they rarely follow ? with the obvious exception of known personalities like Michael Phelps. And if you want badminton or boxing, you'll have to turn elsewhere: the prime-time hours are generally concentrated on the swimming, diving, gymnastics and track and field competitions.

New to NBC this year is the amount of coverage presented during the business day, starting at 10 a.m. following the "Today" show.

The cable and satellite networks all avoid prime-time hours to funnel those viewers into NBC. Except for those hours and the overnight in London, a viewer could expect to see competition on NBC and cable the rest of the day.

The NBC Sports Network, for example, is on the air from 4 a.m. to 7 p.m. ET on Sunday, the second full day of the competition. The cable and satellite outfit did not exist during the last Olympics and will show 292 hours of competition this year. It is being positioned as the home of U.S. team sports. The centerpiece of Sunday's coverage, for example, is the U.S. men's basketball team's game against France.

While producers want the NBC Sports Network to form an identity as a home of U.S. team sports, the truth is that NBC, NBC Sports and MSNBC are airing so much competition that they will lack clearly focused identities. The best way to keep track of their daytime schedules is to keep checking NBCOlympics.com.

As it has in the past, the CNBC business network is positioned as the home of Olympic boxing, including women's boxing for the first time. The competition will be focused weekdays on the hours between the close of financial markets and the beginning of TV prime-time.

Between July 28 and Aug. 3, Bravo will air the Olympics tennis competition.

The amount of hours available to Spanish-speaking viewers through Telemundo are also being sharply increased, and then network promises a broader look at the range of competitions than it has in the past. Still, swimming, basketball and soccer will be the sports the network concentrates upon.

Through cable and satellite providers, NBC is also running speciality channels devoted to the basketball and soccer competitions. For the first time, the Olympics will also be presented in 3-D with a special channel available to viewers with this technical capability.

With all that coverage on television, NBC will be offering even more online. That represents a change in philosophy; the network once worried that making competitions available online could cut into the number of people who want to watch on television. Now NBC's leaders believe all of the online competition will compel viewers to want to watch more online.

The NBC Olympics Live Extra App gives fans a variety of options, including live streams of what is being shown on the TV networks. Online channels will also be set up to offer coverage of every single Olympic competition taking place, and the Gold Zone will have rapidly-moving coverage of the day's most compelling live events.

To satisfy cable and satellite operators, NBC is requiring viewers to prove that they have a cable or satellite subscription in order to access the online options. This requires a username and password from the companies, so interested viewers would be advised to set those up before the games start to avoid missing out.

The Rise and Fall of the American Childhood | The New World ...

In 30 years, we've undone many of the most important social achievements put in place to protect and support children.

From the 1930s to 1980, childhood in America became a cherished space for youngsters to grow in. After 1980, and with increasing furor, that space has been under assault and childhood terribly compromised. Look at what we once did and what we?re now doing.

The Rise:

1. Child labor laws.
2. Civil rights protections for all children.
3. Full and secure employment for parents.
4. Play as a mode of learning. Early childhood as a time to invest in child development through stimulating play.
5. Contraception and the Pill allowed women choice and children to feel chosen.
6. Feminism brought fatherhood back home and encouraged men to be robust partners in parenting.
7. Protection from adult violence including corporal punishment and child abuse; the establishment of family and children?s courts, and special sentencing for minors.
8. Access to quality education on an unprecedented scale stimulated by competition with the Russians and influenced by deep psychology. The US moved toward universal inclusion from elementary through post-secondary education.

Yet once these gains were fully established in the top rungs of society, they began to shut down for the nation?s children as a whole. For 50 years, the pendulum swung toward protecting children and guaranteeing a childhood for all; then it began to swing back when less than half of the population had securely achieved these benefits. So despite the language of "going too far? in the direction of a protective, even a ?nanny state,? we have never in fact gone far enough for the least privileged of us.

The Fall:

1.Schools, once protected from the workplace, have been turned into a workplace of rigid rules, intense competition and permanent stress. Even privileged children are educated in the fortress school mentality set in motion by Ronald Reagan?s ?Nation at Risk? report and George Bush?s No Child Left Behind act. The pressure cooker of privileged schooling sets in motion a competitiveness, pitting kids against each other, and ironically, producing insecurity and trauma in the lives of rich kids, too.
2. Play is diminished in importance and recreational activity in the school setting has become a privileged enrichment benefit in private schools.
3. Unemployment and welfare reform have made family life insecure with its greatest impact on the lowest 40% of income earners.
4. Child consumption has skyrocketed as an advertising target, with violence all too often the trigger to this consumption. And despite our public recoil at child molestation, our media continue to sexualize children, especially girls.
5. Failure to protect children from adult assault has become a commonplace discovery in such basic institutions as the Church and sports. In born-again settings, corporal punishment is on the rise, according both to victims and the sale of popular books lauding it as a method of discipline. And of course, profiling in immigrant and poor communities has made vulnerable children even more so.
6. Children in poor and immigrant communities are actually working -- on the land and in sweatshops -- despite our laws to the contrary. Children in this population have less than a 10% chance of a college education. Hunger and homelessness among these children is at shockingly high levels.
7. Challenges to contraception have reached national credibility, with no regard to the memory of unwanted and maimed children resulting from aborted abortions.
8. The extension of the age of culpability for criminal behavior and the use of adult courts for teenage offenders is adding to the pain of children in parts of the socio-economy where the incarceration of parents is disproportionately high.
9. The need for both parents to work in the face of not only economic downturns, but the demand for higher productivity from American workers and lower public benefits, puts the lives of children under stresses that we once aimed to eradicate.

In describing both the rise and fall of American childhood, I?ve quoted no data for two reasons. One, it is all out there. It?s in the press and in the professional literature for all to find. Two, the gathering of data seems to make no difference to public behavior and public policy.

Perhaps it?s time instead for each of us to imagine just one child, one who looks like a child you know and love. Each of these children is the bearer of the accumulated loss summarized in the Rise and Fall.
