(AP) ? It took three weeks, but "Argo" finally found its way to the top of the box office.

The Warner Bros. thriller from director and star Ben Affleck, inspired by the real-life rescue of six U.S. embassy workers during the 1979 Iranian hostage crisis, made nearly $12.4 million this weekend, according to Sunday studio estimates. "Argo" had been in second place the past two weeks and has now made about $60.8 million total.

Debuting at No. 3 was the sprawling, star-studded "Cloud Atlas," which made a disappointing $9.4 million. The nearly three-hour drama, also from Warner Bros., was co-directed by siblings Lana and Andy Wachowski and Tom Tykwer and features an ensemble cast including Tom Hanks, Halle Berry and Hugh Grant playing multiple roles over six story lines.

Dan Fellman, head of distribution at Warner Bros., said the studio thought there might be a good chance of "Argo" coming out on top this weekend.

"We're thrilled. An accomplishment like that is well deserved, they don't happen very often. You would probably have to do a lot of searching to find a movie that opened in wide release to have two No. 2 weekends in a row and hit No. 1 in the third week," Fellman said. "It's a tribute to the film. Word-of-mouth has taken over the campaign. We have a long way to go, we have a lot of year-end accolades which will approach, and we'll see what happens in terms of the Academy."

On the flip side, Fellman acknowledged that "Cloud Atlas" underperformed compared to hopes that it would end up in the $11-12 million range domestically. The movie had an estimated budget of $100 million. But he pointed out that it had a higher per-screen average than any other film opening in the top 10 with $4,681.

"We did very well on the East and West coasts in a number of major cities," he said. "We're challenged in the Midwest and the South."

It was a soft weekend all around, though, with several newcomers opening poorly, Hollywood.com box-office analyst Paul Dergarabedian pointed out. The horror sequel "Silent Hill: Revelation 3-D" from Open Road Films debuted at No. 5 with $8 million and the Paramount Halloween comedy "Fun Size" arrived in 10th place with just over $4 million. "Chasing Mavericks," an inspirational surfing drama from Fox 2000, didn't even open in the top 12 ? it came in at No. 13 with $2.2 million.

The World Series might have been a factor in keeping folks away from the theaters; also, potential moviegoers along the East Coast in the path of Hurricane Sandy might have stayed home this weekend.

"The whole marketplace felt more like September than October. Back in September, we had four down weekends in a row. There was no momentum in the marketplace," Dergarabedian said. "When a holdover is No. 1, it reflects a lack of strength in the marketplace. Every week should have a new movie topping the chart."

As for the philosophical, centuries-spanning "Cloud Atlas," he said: "To have a) a big budget, b) Tom Hanks and c) it's a big, epic film, it doesn't necessarily follow that it's going to be a big box office hit. I admire that they went for it."

But there's hope on the horizon with the animated comedy "Wreck-It Ralph" coming next weekend, the latest James Bond film, "Skyfall," opening Nov. 9 and the final installment in the "Twilight" saga due out Nov. 16. "Skyfall" opened this weekend overseas with a whopping $77.7 million in 25 countries.

"This is just one of those box office weekends we'd rather forget," Dergarabedian said. "Unless you're 'Argo.'"

Estimated ticket sales are for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

1. "Argo," $12.4 million. ($5 million international.)

Honeywell Awarded Air Force GPS Contract | Rocky Mountain ...

It?s official: the US Air Force has awarded Honeywell International Inc. a contract worth about $14 million to provide engineering services to support the new Enhanced GPS and Inertial Navigation Systems (EGIs). This is one of four new contracts the Air Force has awarded? at the end of September, and provides the airforce with high-precision altitude, velocity, heading, and flight vector data for both rotary and fixed-wing aircraft.

?

Honeywell will conduct their work in Clearwater, FL and expects to wrap up by March 31, 2015 according to a statement released from the US Department of Defense. Honeywell brings its over 25 years of experience with laser precision navigation systems to the table, improving EGI capability with heavy investments in software, quartz accelerometers, and digital ring laser gyros.

?

This $14 million contract supports a previous contract for $80.2 million for a variety of platforms for the Army, Navy, and foreign military.

?

Other contracts awarded include Rockwell Collins and L-3 Communications, awarded $30 million each to engineer and test new GPS technology. Raytheon received a little less than $30 million to develop receiver cards for GPS systems.

?

The US is not the only one with a constellation of GPS satellites. Russia is the only real competition with the GLONASS system, but the European Union is working on Galileo, their attempt at a GPS system.

?

The contracts were announced a few days shy of the October launch of the first new GPS satellite, a Boeing GPS IFF. The new satellite provides an improved level of accuracy, a more secure signal for the military, and a longer design life. Although the military relies heavily on the technology for things like weapon systems targeting, so do countless civilians. Whether it is your smartphone or in-dash GPS device, the new GPS satellites will improve your overall experience.

News Corp. May Bid for Penguin for Publishing Spinoff - NYTimes.com

Rupert Murdoch?s News Corporation, the parent company of HarperCollins, is exploring a cash bid for Pearson PLC?s Penguin book division, a step that could ignite a bidding war for Penguin as the publishing industry begins to move toward consolidation.

News Corporation?s interest in Penguin, confirmed by a person briefed on the talks, came shortly after Pearson said it was exploring a deal with Random House?s parent company, the German media conglomerate Bertelsmann, to combine Random House and Penguin into one giant publishing house.

The interest in Penguin underscores the urgency the publishing industry faces in combating the threat of technology companies like Amazon, Google and Apple, whose inexpensive e-books are rapidly transforming the traditional book business.

Analysts have said consolidation of the ?big six? publishing houses is inevitable given the headwinds the industry faces as consumers turn to e-books and as brick-and-mortar stores continue to close. They likened it to the consolidation of record labels when the music industry evolved to deal with the challenge from iTunes and the downloading of songs.

?Publishers now face a single dominant book retailer, Barnes & Noble, and a single dominant online retailer, Amazon,? said Mike Shatzkin, the founder and chief executive of the Idea Logical Company, a consultant to publishers.

Acquiring Penguin, whose revenues have been in a slide in recent years, would provide an opportunity for an existing publishing company to gain scale and cut costs by eliminating redundant imprints and combining operations like distribution and marketing. Additionally, a combined company would have the greater heft necessary to better negotiate with Amazon and other e-book retailers.

For News Corporation, a book-related acquisition would line up with its near-term corporate strategy. In the coming months, the company is expected to complete the planned spinoff of its publishing assets ? including HarperCollins, its book publisher, and newspapers like The Wall Street Journal and The New York Post ? into a separate, publicly traded company.

Mr. Murdoch is said to have proceeded with the split this summer in part because a separate publishing company would allow him to explore acquisitions without facing fierce resistance from shareholders, according to several people familiar with the company?s thinking. News Corporation?s last major acquisition, of Dow Jones & Company, publisher of The Journal and Barron?s, for $5.6 billion in 2007, was widely met with investor resentment.

News Corporation?s interest in Penguin was first reported in The Sunday Times, a London paper that is also owned by News Corporation. According to The Times, News Corporation is exploring a cash offer of $1.6 billion. Such an overture could prompt a competitive bidding war and bring Pearson a premium on a business it reportedly has considered unloading.

Officials with News Corporation and Pearson declined to comment.

If completed, a merger of Penguin and Random House would create a publishing behemoth that would control roughly 25 percent of all books published in the United States. That kind of scale would present major competition for HarperCollins.

For News Corporation, owning Penguin could also lift the media company?s fledgling education business, recently named Amplify. Mr. Murdoch picked the former New York City schools chancellor Joel I. Klein to build the division, which provides digital learning tools to teachers and students. The education division will also be a part of the newly spun-off publishing company.

Revenues at News Corporation?s book-publishing business grew by 11 percent, or $128 million, in the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2010, compared with a year earlier, largely related to the success of ?Going Rogue? by Sarah Palin and a jump in e-book sales, the company said in its annual report. In the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2011, News Corporation did not break out revenues for the book division but said it struggled because of ?lower book sales due to fewer new releases? and ?lower licensing fees.?

HarperCollins?s stable of authors includes Joyce Carol Oates and Paulo Coelho.

Penguin reported $1.61 billion in revenue in 2011, a 4 percent decrease from the previous year. About 12 percent of Penguin?s total revenue last year came from e-books, up from 6 percent in 2010, according to Pearson?s annual report. Pearson announced this month that its longtime chief executive, Marjorie Scardino, would step down at the end of the year, which led to speculation that the company would seek to sell its print units, including Penguin and The Financial Times, in order to focus on its more lucrative education business.

John Fallon, Pearson?s incoming chief executive, said in an Oct. 3 interview that the ?portfolio of Pearson, it?s constantly changing and evolving,? and that ?we never rule out anything.?

The last big merger in the book industry was Bertelsmann?s 1998 acquisition of Random House for more than $1 billion.

On Thursday, reports of discussions between Random House and Penguin brought concerns among some authors and their representatives, who worried that fewer imprints would mean fewer bidders for books. ?The optimist in me hopes that in any restructuring of the new company, the editorial side would largely be left alone, so the number of books ? and authors ? published would not dramatically decrease,? David Gernert, a literary agent, said in an e-mail.

(AP) ? Jimmie Johnson dominated, as expected, at Martinsville Speedway, and Brad Keselowski didn't flinch.

This championship duel might go down to the wire after all.

Johnson, a five-time series champion, raced to his seventh career victory on NASCAR's trickiest oval Sunday, and the triumph helped him erase a seven-point deficit and supplant Keselowski as the points leader with three events remaining.

Even so, Johnson knows the title chase is far from over, that there's plenty of racing yet to do.

"I'm ecstatic about the win today and ecstatic about the points lead, but this is no cake-walk," Johnson said after the 59th victory of his career and fourth this season. "These guys are bringing their best each and every week. ... The next two races will tell the tale. Anything can happen. We could both wad it up next week and Clint Bowyer is your champion."

Johnson moved two points ahead of Keselowski, who finished sixth for his highest career showing at the track, and came away knowing that he'd more than held his ground on a track where he's still learning and Johnson is as good as anyone.

"He's our competition and we've got to beat him," Keselowski said. "We know that, but at some point you've got to do your own thing and just rely on what gets you to where you're at, and what's got us to where we're at is just solid finishes when we don't have a shot to win the race. And we didn't have a shot to win today and we got a solid finish, so I feel confident about that."

The series next moves to Texas and Phoenix before finishing up at Homestead-Miami.

"I know this championship's going to come down to Homestead," Keselowski said. "You've just got to be in position to where you've got a shot at it and we're doing the things it's going to take."

Both drivers needed only to look at Denny Hamlin's day to be reminded that things can go south fast. Hamlin seemed poised to get in the thick of it, and then had an electrical problem that sent him to a 33rd place finish and out of contention.

"When these things happen, you've just got to suck it up and move on," Hamlin said. "There's nothing I can do about it. One of these days it's going to be our time. It's just not right now."

Keselowski's day was nowhere near as adventurous as Hamlin's, but effective all the same.

He started 32nd, methodically worked his way forward, and was never really a factor until he took a late gamble to grab the lead ? and a crucial bonus point. He was leading the race briefly when a caution flag flew and he and Dale Earnhardt Jr. opted to stay out, then watched with surprise as the other 16 lead-lap cars all headed to pit road for fresh tires.

"It's at the end of the race and half the field had just pitted 20 or 30 laps ago," Keselowski said. "If I was running 15th, I would have stayed out. I would have put 'em in my shoes and said, 'By golly, I would have stayed out.' None of those guys did and I don't know why. Well Dale (Earnhardt) Jr. did. He had some sense. It just wasn't meant to be."

When the race went back to green with 19 laps to go, Keselowski was a sitting duck whose best bet was to hang on for as long as he could and then avoid any Martinsville mayhem that cropped up in a furious dash to the finish.

Johnson, who led eight times for 193 laps, passed him on lap 487 on his way to making the race a bonus points bonanza. He got one for leading a lap, one for leading the most laps and three for the victory, wiping out a seven-point deficit.

Kyle Busch was second, followed by Kasey Kahne, Aric Almirola, Bowyer, Keselowski, Jeff Gordon and Brian Vickers.

On the final restart, Busch said he was trying to avoid spinning Johnson heading into turn one, but nudged him. Johnson slowed, and Busch too, and "when I went back to the gas, I spun my tires and got loose, and he squirted away from me."

Bowyer also had a great car, leading 154 laps, and Gordon led 92.

Until the problems arose, Hamlin had put on a clinic about how to pass cars on the 0.526-mile oval.

After his first pit stop, Hamlin was penalized for entering pit road too fast, a penalty that moved him to the back of the lead lap, which was 31st. Immediately, he started quickly working his way forward.

After 200 laps, he was contending and actually left pit road with the lead, but again, he was penalized for speeding entering pit road, again dropping him to the back of the lead lap, this time 28th.

He again worked his way into the top five until his problems dropped him 34 laps behind.

Hamlin dropped 49 points off the pace. Bowyer is third, 26 back, and Kahne is 29 back.

S.Africa stocks end higher, markets brace for storm

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - South African stocks ended slightly higher on Monday after petrochemicals giant Sasol rose on a weaker rand and a slightly firmer crude oil price and as earnings forecasts lifted other shares.

Trade volumes, however, remained low, as traders were watching the impact of a huge and potentially damaging hurricane hitting the U.S. East Coast.

U.S. stock markets were shut in the first weather-related closure for 27 years and they may close again on Tuesday.

"Stocks like Sasol have picked up a bit due to the rand being slightly weaker and commodity prices stabilising," said Bernhard Grobler, head of stockbroking at Investec.

"But it's been very quiet today, exceptionally low volumes, largely because the American markets are closed due to the hurricane."

The benchmark JSE Top-40 index added 0.48 percent to 32,877.38, while the broader All-share index added 0.33 percent to 36,993.06.

Sasol led the gainers and ended up 2.3 percent at 377.77 rand as the local currency weakened slightly against the U.S. dollar. A weaker rand is positive for South African exporters as it lifts profits when overseas earnings are brought home.

Africa's biggest grocer Shoprite Holdings ended 1.3 percent higher at 180.25 rand after reporting a 15.6 percent jump in first-quarter sales.

Nedbank also added 0.98 percent after saying the bank was on track for double-digit earnings growth this year.

Nearly all platinum and gold stocks on the resource-heavy bourse fell into negative territory, despite an end in sight for the labour unrest that swept through the industry over the past two months.

Losers were led by Harmony Gold, down 2.7 percent to 69.28 rand, followed by diversified miner African Rainbow Minerals and the world's biggest platinum producer Anglo American Platinum, down 2.59 percent and 1.5 percent, respectively.

Trade volumes were low, with just over 109 million shares changing hands, compared with last year's daily average of 255 million shares. Decliners outnumbered advancers at 190 to 104, with 55 stocks unchanged.

Snipp Interactive's mobile marketing services expand in Mexico with ...

Pdf 10:59 am by Deborah Bacal

Mobile marketing firm () said today that its partner in Mexico has been chosen by telecom operator Telmex to create a marketing campaign for cell phone and tablet users. ??

Telmex is owned by Fortune 500 company America Movil, the largest telecommunications company in Mexico.?

The company owns around 90 per cent of the telephone lines in Mexico City and currently has revenue in of more than US$12 billion annually. ?It also provides communication services throughout Latin and South America. ?

The marketing campaign will use Snipp technology to create a contest for users to enter with their cell phones. ?

Snipp's ?Mobilize Me? platform supports several input mechanisms for mobilizing marketing campaigns for companies, including text message, QR codes, tags and Snapp tags.

Already, the business, which was established in 2007, has provided its services to several Fortune 500 companies and other major brands, advertising agencies and publishers, including Wal-Mart (), ESPN, Time Inc, Ford (), Nike (), Wendy's (NASDAQ:WEN) and Campbell Soup ().?

Back in May, Snipp inked a deal to license its Mobilize Me platform to digital marketing agency Virket S.A., providing mobile marketing services in the Mexican market together on an exclusive basis.?

The contest for Telmex will be an "augmented reality video game experience", Snipp said, complemented with Telmex branded and messaging.?

Users will be able to enter the contest through their cell phone by simply following instructions provided at all Telmex retail outlets and phone kiosks across Mexico City.?

The campaign is expected to launch in early December to tie into Christmas promotions offered by Telmex.

?We are very excited to launch our newest technology, an augmented reality solution, with Telmex," said Snipp CEO, Atul Sabharwal.

"This solution provides brands with a groundbreaking new technology that can engage customers by the one item they have with them at all times ? their cell phones or tablets.?

"Marketing in Mexico is focusing more and more on mobile solutions, as is the rest of the world, and expect to capture significant market share as evidenced by our ability to win business from a big established player like Telmex. ?

Indeed, the partnership with VirKet has proved lucrative for Snipp, as earlier this month, they announced a deal with Mexican yellow pages publisher, ?Secci?n Amarilla, to develop mobile solutions exclusively for Secci?n Amarilla clients.

CEO of VirKet, Pedro Quinza?os Cancino, added: "This [Telmex] campaign puts us on the cutting edge of mobile marketing technology in Mexico with Snipp.?

"We continue to effectively merge offline and online marketing solutions together across a range of industries in Mexico and see our business and interest in mobile solutions growing at a fast pace.??

The two companies are also aiming to provide their mobile solutions to Sanborns, the retail arm that oversees 180 Sanborns Stores, 90 Stores, 60 Mixup Stores, 30 iShop Stores and 3 Fifth Avenue Stores in Mexico.?

In addition, the parties are working on deploying a range of mobile-enabled business models for the Mexican market in 2013-14 for various clients.

EU to mull plan to bring non-euro states into bank union

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - European Union countries will examine a plan this week to allow the ECB to supervise banks in states outside the euro zone alongside those within the currency area, according to an EU document that lays down limits on the central bank's role.

Last week, EU leaders agreed to build a new system of supervision led by the European Central Bank, as a step towards a banking union where chiefly euro zone countries would jointly back problem lenders, in a move to underpin the currency.

But the plan has sparked concerns among the 10 countries in the wider European Union that do not use the euro that they will be indirectly affected by the ECB's new supervisory powers and put at a disadvantage, whether they join the scheme or not.

For the framework to become reality, diplomats must first find a way to accommodate countries outside the euro zone, such as Sweden or Denmark, who may want to join the scheme.

On Tuesday, EU officials circulated a document outlining one way to break the impasse, by establishing a supervisory board within the ECB, a body that would play a role in supervising lenders and where non-euro zone members would have a vote.

"This helps square the circle for non-euro countries," said one EU official. "It is an effort to find equal treatment."

In the draft legislation obtained by Reuters, officials make clear that the final say is with the ECB although it must explain itself if it rejects a decision by the supervisory body.

"The ECB will take all the key decisions," said a second EU official.

This may worry a country outside the euro zone such as Hungary, which wants equal representation if it is to sign up. Granting this is legally difficult, however, because the central bank answers only to the 17 members of the euro zone.

As a concession to those worried that the ECB's new remit will be too wide, the document fences off the central bank's powers from those of each country's agencies.

It says national supervisors should "carry out regular operational tasks" in monitoring banks, while the ECB focuses its efforts on systemic banks and those lenders which have been bailed out. Again, ultimate authority would rest with the ECB.

The banking union would have three major steps: the ECB takes over monitoring euro zone banks and others that sign up; a single fund is created to close down and settle the debts of failed banks; and a comprehensive scheme to protect savers' deposits is established.

The new supervision should pave the way for the new euro zone rescue fund, the European Stability Mechanism (ESM), to directly inject capital into struggling banks, such as those in Ireland.

Britain and all other members of the European Union must give the green light to the banking union before it can go ahead, an approval that could be delayed or withheld if their concerns are not addressed.

The close ties between some troubled governments and the banks they supervise, and on which they also rely to buy their debt, have dragged both ever deeper into crisis.

A banking union would break this link by making the policing of banks supranational and establishing central schemes paid into collectively to cover the costs of closing failed lenders and protecting savers' deposits.

Decline of Working Class Sport ? Gucci Little Piggy

Posted by C.R. on 10/23/2012

My interest in the prole/elite dynamic at Yankee Stadium and within professional sports in general led me to research on the working class roots of English professional soccer and the evolution of attending crowds (mentioned here by Steve Sailer):

Shouting for your team in a rickety, windswept stadium, then drinking a few pints in the club and conducting a post-mortem on defeat or reliving a famous victory: this was the essence of Saturday afternoons in small town England and Scotland for decades. It lasted until the nineteen sixties, when the television boom and off-course betting gave working men something else to do on a Saturday afternoon. The seventies saw a switch in family values which meant that the football match no longer figured top of the list of Saturday priorities for many men, and the hooligan explosion of the late seventies and eighties further cut back the numbers of those prepared to endure cold fingers, poor toilet facilities [sometimes none for women] and a barrage of foul language in order to shout for their local team. The recent resurgence in the numbers attending football matches has come about as a result of safer and more comfortable grounds and the almost total disappearance of the hooligan problem. It has also, however, signalled a shift in the social backgrounds of those attending. Along with an increase in the numbers of women at matches, there are notably more middle-income people attending, and most clubs now have family stands, where parents accompanying children can sit in reserved accommodation. This is, in many ways, a welcome change, and the image of football has had a facelift over the last three years which would have been unimaginable as recently as the crisis-ridden nineteen-eighties, which saw many lifelong football fans give up going to the game in the wake of the disasters at Heysel and Hillsborough, among others. It has also, however, taken football away from its working-class origins, and there are many in the North who feel that the game has been usurped by the middle-class entrepreneur. This perhaps accounts in some measure for the fact that many youngsters in Lancashire and Yorkshire have switched their allegiance to rugby league, the other great working-class pastime of northern England.

And later in the piece:

Although there was still a spirit of rational recreation in working-class sport, it had taken new directions by the end of the century. The combination of benevolence from a ?kindly? ruling class and a desire for an orderly and healthy workforce had led to initiatives from factory owners such as the provision of after-hours sports clubs for the men and, albeit rarely, organised day-trips to the seaside or to the country.

This reminds me of a conversation I had with a pro-union guy I met at a local Occupy Wall Street protest I was observing.? The guy, who was dressed up as Benjamin Franklin, theorized (a la ?Bowling Alone? though he didn?t mention the book) that bowling took off in the ?Golden Era? 1950s and 1960s as men who worked in factories and where naturally part of unions formed league teams in order to escape the toil of their jobs and the families that naturally followed from these jobs.? While bowling alleys of the working-class mold have mostly disappeared (the only bowling alleys that exist cater to kids with full arcades and ?cosmic bowling? specials and curbs and such; not like the old grease-monkey bowling alleys where the mechanical behind-the-scenes activities were front-and-center to the bowling experience), softball leagues have sprouted up in their place, probably because they can be played in public parks or recreational complexes rather than at places of business which have overhead i.e. electricity and labor costs.

(AP) ? A Wisconsin woman whose husband is suspected in a fatal spa shooting said he threatened to throw acid in her face and that he jealously terrorized her "every waking moment," according to court documents.

Authorities say Radcliffe Franklin Haughton, 45, shot and killed three women, injured four more, then turned the gun on himself Sunday at the suburban Milwaukee spa where his wife worked. Police haven't said if Zina Haughton, 42, was among those killed or wounded.

In a written request for a restraining order filed Oct. 8, Zina Haughton said her husband was convinced she was cheating on him and that aside from the acid threat he also vowed to burn her and her family with gas. He said he would kill her if she ever left him or called the police, according to the court papers obtained Monday by The Associated Press.

"His threats terrorize my every waking moment," she wrote.

Earlier this month, Haughton was arrested for slashing his wife's tires; she was granted a four-year restraining order on Thursday.

Under the order, Haughton, of Brown Deer, was prohibited from owning a firearm.

Police last year responded to reports of domestic violence at the Haughton home. Zina Haughton called 911 saying her enraged husband had thrown her clothes and bedding into the yard and doused her vehicle with tomato juice. Radcliffe Haughton was charged with disorderly conduct, but the charge was later dismissed because a witness failed to appear in court.

Brookfield Police Chief Dan Tushaus said he wasn't aware of a motive in Sunday's shooting, but that investigators weren't looking for anyone else.

"I can tell you we're not seeking additional suspects," he said at a news conference Sunday evening. "The community can feel safe."

A .40-caliber semiautomatic handgun was used in the attack, said agent Tom Ahern of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

A spokeswoman at Froedtert Hospital where the injured were taken said one of the four women remained in critical condition early Monday. Kathy Sieja said the three other women were in satisfactory condition.

The shootings set off a confusing, six-hour search for the gunman, forcing the lockdown of a nearby mall, a country club and the hospital.

Authorities said it would take time to sort out exactly what happened, and emphasized they were still interviewing witnesses and rescuers and didn't have a firm timeline of events. Brookfield Mayor Steve Ponto called the shootings "a senseless act on the part of one person."

The chaos started around 11 a.m. at the Azana Day Spa, a two-story, 9,000-square-foot building across from a major shopping mall. The first officers on the scene found the building filled with smoke from a fire authorities believe Haughton set, Tushaus said.

They also found a 1-pound propane tank they initially thought might be an improvised explosive device, Tushaus said. That slowed the search of the building as law enforcement agents waited for a bomb squad to clear the scene.

Tushaus said later that police didn't know whether the gunman had brought the propane tank or whether a contractor had left it.

The search was also complicated by the layout of the building, with numerous small treatment rooms and several locked areas, Tushaus said. While officers initially thought the gunman had fled the building, they later found his body in a locked room, he said.

The bodies of the victims were also found in the spa. Tushaus said investigators were still working to identify them. He said the four survivors were between the ages of 22 and 40. He didn't know if they were employees or customers at the spa.

Haughton's father, Radcliffe Haughton, Sr., spoke to The Associated Press shortly before police announced that they had found his son's body. In telephone interviews from Florida, he said he had last spoken to his son a few days ago, but didn't know anything was wrong. He begged his son to turn himself in.

After learning of his son's death, he said only: "This is very sad."

It was the second mass shooting in Wisconsin this year. Wade Michael Page, a 40-year-old Army veteran and white supremacist, killed six people and injured three others before fatally shooting himself Aug. 5 at a Sikh temple south of Milwaukee.

Sunday's shooting took place less than a mile from where seven people were killed and four wounded on March 12, 2005, when a gunman opened fire at a Living Church of God service held at a hotel.

NASA sees active region on the sun emit another flare

ScienceDaily (Oct. 23, 2012) ? The sun emitted a significant solar flare on Oct. 22, 2012, peaking at 11:17 p.m. EDT. The flare came from an active region on the left side of the sun that has been numbered AR 1598, which has already been the source of a number of weaker flares. This flare was classified as an X1.8-class flare.

"X-class" denotes the most intense flares, while the number provides more information about its strength. An X2 is twice as intense as an X1, an X3 is three times as intense, and on. An X-class flare of this intensity can cause degradation or blackouts of radio communications for about an hour.

Solar flares are powerful bursts of radiation. Harmful radiation from a flare cannot pass through Earth's atmosphere to physically affect humans on the ground, however -- when intense enough -- they can disturb the atmosphere in the layer where GPS and communications signals travel. This can disrupt radio signals for anywhere from minutes to hours.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association, which is the United States government's official source for space weather forecasts and alerts, categorized the radio blackout associated with this flare as an R3, on a scale from R1 to R5. It has since subsided.

Increased numbers of flares are quite common at the moment, since the sun's normal 11-year activity cycle is ramping up toward solar maximum, which is expected in 2013. Humans have tracked this solar cycle continuously since it was discovered in 1843, and it is normal for there to be many flares a day during the sun's peak activity. The first X-class flare of the current solar cycle occurred on Feb. 15, 2011 and there have been 15 X-class flares total in this cycle, including this one. The largest X-class flare in this cycle was an X6.9 on Aug. 9, 2011. This is the 7th X-class flare in 2012 with the largest being an X5.4 flare on March 7.

This flare did not have an associated Earth-directed coronal mass ejection (CME), another solar phenomenon that can send solar particles into space and affect electronic systems in satellites and on Earth.

PFT: Pats beat Jets in OT; why was it so hard?

Jerry RichardsonAP

Panthers general manager Marty Hurney was fired Monday.

But the clock on his tenure really started ticking on Feb. 1, 2009, the day Panthers owner Jerry Richardson underwent heart transplant surgery.

Since then, Richardson has been a man aware of his mortality, and time to build was no longer the first priority for the 76-year-old owner.

How the Panthers are closer to winning now than they were last night is a mystery, because many of the moves Hurney made in recent years were strictly of the owner?s bidding.

From taking a hard line on franchised defensive end Julius Peppers to paying loyalty contracts to players such as Jake Delhomme to keep the 12-4 2008 division title team together, many of the moves Hurney was criticized most heavily for had Richardson?s thumbprints all over them. Likewise using the uncapped year in 2010 to clear the books for a post-lockout splurge on fan favorites such as DeAngelo Williams were moves dictated from upstairs.

The former sportswriter turned salary cap manager handled those moves, and built as best he could after the Panthers once-happy marriage with coach John Fox fell apart in 2009.

The current mess is as much about the coaching staff he hired not using the players he acquired properly, but Hurney was an easy fall guy for a team which had won nine games since the start of the 2009 season.

That overshadows a stable base of talent he?s assembled, including quarterback Cam Newton.

How they proceed at this point is a mystery, though it?s reasonable to assume team president Danny Morrison (the man Richardson hired to run the business when he fired his sons) will have a strong hand in the process.

Either way, the next football man will be on a short leash, because the man who brought football to the Carolinas believes he?s on borrowed time.

How the video games industry is faring

Companies in the video games industry have begun releasing their earnings reports for the latest quarter. Here's a look at selected companies that make or sell video games or machines.

? Oct. 18: Microsoft Corp. says Xbox 360 platform revenue fell 24 percent, or $418 million, mostly because of fewer consoles sold and lower revenue from video games software. The year-ago quarter saw the release of "Gears of War 3," with no comparable major releases in the just-ended quarter. That was offset partly by higher revenue from its Xbox Live subscription service.

Coming up:

? Wednesday: Nintendo Co.

? Oct. 30: Electronic Arts Inc., Take-Two Interactive Software Inc.

? Nov. 1: Sony Corp.

? Nov. 5: THQ Inc.

? Nov. 7: Activision Blizzard Inc.

What accelerators do best ? and where they fall down ? European ...

Accelerators are of great interest to many startups: the funding and mentoring they offered has huge appeal to both first-time founders and more seasoned entrepreneurs. But what exactly are the benefits they offer ? and are there ways for startups to get some of them even without joining an accelerator?

As I moved from the acceleration side back to being an entrepreneur, I wanted to systematically list what I?d learned and work out what entrepreneurs could generally benefit from. I also ran a survey and a string of interviews to find the value that startups expect from accelerators ? and ask why they actually got. My findings form the backbone of my book Speed Up Your Startup: What Entrepreneurs Should Learn From Accelerators To Succeed With Their Businesses.?

What I found was there are 10 primary ways accelerators add value to startups. Breaking them down, we?re able to see how that value is produced, and come up with ways to get the same advantage elsewhere. The goal is both to demystify and examine the workings of a successful accelerator, and produce recommendations that startups can act on.

Let?s take a look.

1. Generating and validating an idea and a business model. Accelerators help through expertise in the field, knowing what has worked and what hasn?t before, and what others are doing that is similar.?

2. Investing and finding more investors. There is more to startup support than money, but it helps a lot. As well as the validation offered by the previous point, investors also like the validation provided by other investors. A startup from an accelerator program has already passed a certain vetting process and is thus likelier to be interesting. This also works in the case of co-investing: many investors like co-investing with proven accelerators and VCs.

3. Providing contacts and opening doors. A good investor can open doors for you that you wouldn?t even get to knock on yourself. This also goes for customers, partners, potential hires and media contacts. Accelerators that have proven successful in the past ? or ones that have successful individuals behind them ?are more interesting and thus have the strongest contacts.

4. Providing mentors, advisors and guidance. This is a key component of many programs. The startup world runs by advising and mentorship. Other founders share their own experiences on their blogs, in the talks they give, and in the mentorship sessions at accelerator programs. These are both networking opportunities and learning opportunities for startups, but primarily they are geared toward telling the startups what they should do to multiply their chances of success.

5. Providing hands-on help or education. If the startup needs to do something that they can?t do themselves, accelerators may either help them, train them or help find someone to do it for them. It is common for an early-stage accelerator to help in company formation, for example. Some have experts-in-residence for instance in marketing and recruiting.?

6. Helping in product development and testing. An accelerator can help shape the product while it is being developed. This depends much on the length of the program and on the program?s focus. It?s also key whether this is done within the accelerator?s core team, by their immediate network or by securing test or pilot customers and users externally.

7. Helping with product marketing and user acquisition. Accelerators are very concerned with getting real users and customers for their startups, and some help with this by providing hands-on resources for marketing. Without large marketing budgets, the most efficient way to ensure this is building products that have marketing built into their logic.

8. Providing a peer group in a high-pressure environment. Founders get best along with other founders ? not because of their amicable personalities, but because they share a passion for doing something special that outsiders often may not understand. While that?s at least a generalization and at worst a clich?, having a peer group who face similar challenges can be highly motivating. Time pressure may seem like a bug, not a feature, but it?s a success factor in a startup accelerator. Deadlines are tangible measures of discipline ? and enforcements of it.

9. Providing a physical location and support resources. A place to work from can be a co-working space, an office or a series of temporary gatherings. Physical resources like printers, chairs and coffee makers also make a startup?s life easier.

10. Negotiating and providing discounts, freebies and perks. This is slightly related to points 3?5, but worth underlining separately due to their potential impact. For example, Amazon Web Services partners with leading startup accelerators and offers free credits to their services, making the infrastructure choice effortless to many.

The survey confirmed this breakdown, but also unearthed some interesting differences between what startups expect from accelerators and what they actually receive from them.

Mentorship and advice from the core team, for example, had both high expectations and were deemed valuable by startups taking the survey ? but customer and partner contacts in the industry didn?t fare as well.

Forty nine percent of respondents who had not participated in an accelerator reported that customer contacts would be very desirable. However, only 22 percent of the participants reported that the industry contacts provided by the accelerator had been excellent. Forty six percent reported these to have been ?neutral? or ?poor?. More detailed answers support this, with many founders pointing out that an accelerator would add the most value by providing partner or customer contacts. ?Industry fit? was also mentioned as an important criteria when selecting an accelerator program in the first place.?

The lack of auxiliary business services ? such as company formation, accounting or payroll processing ? provided by the accelerator programs was a big letdown. 67 percent of respondents reported these as ?poor? or ?neutral?. At the same time, in non-accelerated startups, 65 percent of respondents placed these services in the top two categories of interest.

The survey was taken by 151 startups and supplemented with 33 additional interviews. More about the survey and the book is at the Speed Up Your Startup site.

CEA officially brands 4K as Ultra HD, gets ready for a flood of new displays at CES

Now that HDTV is "the new normal" according to Nielsen (its most recent stats say more than 75 percent of US households have one) then naturally, it's time to upgrade to 4K. This week the Consumer Electronics Association officially dubbed such screens -- with characteristics including at least eight million active pixels, and 3,840 x 2,160 resolution, among other things -- Ultra High-Definition, or Ultra HD in order to help educate consumers about the new tech. The ITU already laid down its spec recommendations for Ultra High Definition TV so the industry should be able to move forward in unison pushing super high-res displays across the land. Of course we did say "should," and Sony is already informing media outlets that it plans to market its 4K products as "4K UHD." Whatever it's called, we saw 84-inch screens from multiple manufacturers announced recently, and with the CEA's announcement we're penciling in a few more pixel-dense models for the big Las Vegas show in January.

Changes In Business Taking Roberts Audio Video To Waterford ...

Roberts Audio Video has adapted to a number of changes in its market over its 78 years in business; now the owner has determined that the best way for the business to thrive is to take it from the New London storefront where it has been all that time.

The business is currently in the midst of a move from its Bank Street location to 737 Broad Street. Rob Grabon, who took over ownership of Roberts Audio Video in June, says he had been looking at the location in recent years as a possible new home for the business and the expiration of a lease on the current property was one factor in the decision to relocate.

?It?s just time to move to our own place that has easy access to parking and is in the center of a shopping district,? he said.

Grabon said the new location offers these amenities due to its proximity to I-95 and the Crystal Mall. He said that as a former residence converted to office space, it will also allow for showroom space to demonstrate to customers what a particular setup will look like in their house.

?I didn?t even know when I first looked at that location that it was in Waterford,? said Barry Levinson, a former owner of the business. ?It was a case of that location was the right location, and it turned out to be Waterford instead of New London.?

History

Levinson?s father, Robert, first opened the store in 1934. At that time, it was known as The Electric Shop and specialized in small appliances such as toasters. The business transitioned to stereos and television in the 1940s and 1950s. It was located in 90 Bank Street and expanded to the building next door after the business there, a marine chandlery, when out of business.

After running Roberts Audio Video for 38 years, Levinson turned over the reins to his son, Barry. The business ceased its record sales and began to transition to in-home installation, putting in television systems and home theaters. In June, Levinson turned the business over to Grabon, who has worked at Roberts Audio Video since 1989. Levinson has continued to be a stockholder and partner in the business, but plans to retire.

Levinson said over 80 percent of Roberts Audio Video?s business is now in home installation. He said the business was able to weather changes to the audio visual market due to its long involvement in television installation, but that such businesses have increasingly been moving to custom businesses and showrooms. Grabon said that while home installation was once a matter of setting up a stereo system, home entertainment systems now include a number of in-depth custom factors such as integrating streaming music from the Internet and high-definition television systems.

?The industry?s really evolved quite a bit from the early days,? he said.

Levinson said he thought most of the successful retail businesses in downtown New London have had a similar model of relying more on mail order and contract services rather than foot traffic. Grabon also said he thought the business district has shifted from downtown New London to the Crystal Mall area.

?New London?s changed in the past several years,? he said. ?It?s becoming a very arts and entertainment district.?

In clearing out its old location, Grabon and Levinson have discovered several pieces of the business?s history, including vintage signs and posters from the 1940s and 1950s. The business is also holding a clearance sale to sell the items which will not be moved to the Waterford location. Levinson joked that the heavier items have the deepest discounts.

?There are a lot of people who are sad to see a business leave downtown, see our location leave downtown,? he said.

However, Levinson said he considers the New London location as a valuable business location and said the building?s owner is looking to attract businesses there. Grabon said customers have also expressed excitement for the growth of the business and its retention in the area.

?We certainly have a lot of history here, but I think it?s going to be a good move for us,? he said.

About David Leopold:

Being born into a family of Entrepreneurs, David Leopold really did not put his Dream in place until his father?s death, when he was 23.? Publishing was the pre-chosen field, as his Father lived most of his own life before he realized his own dream of owning a publication.? David personally struggled having his mother as a business partner.? He did what any Entrepreneur would do; he bought the business from his Mother, in a deal brokered by his maternal Grandfather, a successful businessman.

That was in the 1970?s.? Prior to his first business investment, David had displayed an interest in Publishing, but his college journey actually took him into a different direction.? He has never taken a business or marketing class, but has had numerous classroom experiences with college and high school students who have!

While being involved in three different publishing businesses in the 70?s, he chose to pursue other marketing efforts in the 1980?s. He was involved in at least six separate Direct Marketing/Direct Mail endeavors.? It was in that decade that he developed his keen understanding of Return on Marketing Investment.

In the 1990?s, he spent most of his time in ?partnership? with 19? Fortune 500 companies.? The marketing discipline was Teleservices.? He established a national reputation in Insurance Direct Marketing and was asked to participate in numerous speaking opportunities while interacting with 19 of the largest 52 Insurance Companies, generating approximately $100 MM in revenue with his Insurance Direct Marketing business ?partners?.

On January 1, 2000, he began to learn how to effectively use the Internet as a Marketing tool.? Privately, he worked with three international service providers in the Insurance industry.? In 2004, he began to develop his Small Business Model embracing the Business2Business discipline under his ?Dreaming With Entrepreneurs? brand.? Two years ago, he began to build The David Leopold Network Community. Small Businesses could realize unlimited business opportunities with the Optimized Landing Page Application he developed with his 24-year-old Applications Developer partner.
