For Lab Mice, The Medical Advances Keep Coming

When scientists want to test new therapies for cancer or heart disease, they frequently turn to mice for help. For most mice, this isn't the best thing that could happen to them. Being a research subject has definite disadvantages, at least for mice.

But most people prefer a new therapy be tested in a rodent rather than making a human patient the guinea pig ? if you'll forgive the twisted metaphor.

So every year, mice get the latest therapies. And some of the time, they're cured. For example, Richard Vile, a researcher at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., works with a strain of lab mice that are prone to getting prostate cancer.

"What we've done is we've vaccinated mice against tumors," he says.

Vile says the vaccine is made from a special virus containing cancer cell genes. The modified virus energizes the mouse's immune system so it can fight off the cancer. The vaccine doesn't prevent cancer; instead, Vile gives the vaccine to mice that already have tumors.

"In a proportion of the mice, in our best experiments, those tumors would actually go away," Vile says. "It is good news for mice."

The good news doesn't end with prostate cancer. Scientists have reported progress this year in melting away all sorts of tumors, as well as promising treatments for a variety of other ailments.

Lois Smith, an ophthalmologist at Children's Hospital in Boston, has been studying an eye problem that afflicts premature infants and people with diabetes. The problem is caused by abnormal blood vessel growth in the eye that can lead to blindness. She's turned to mice to answer some fundamental questions:

"How do we promote normal blood vessel regrowth?" she asks. "How do we prevent the abnormal new blood vessels from growing?"

This year, she reported that giving mice omega-3 fatty acids ? that stuff you find in fish oil ? was an approach that shows promise.

"It decreases by 50 percent the abnormal new blood vessel growth," she says. This approach only works before the problem develops. It won't be much help for the three blind mice we've all heard so much about.

But just as some therapies are tested in mice before they are tested in humans, some are tested in mouse cells before they are tested in live mice.

Jeffrey Holt, an otolaryngologist, also at Children's Hospital in Boston, has found some genes that have the wrong DNA sequence in people with an inherited form of deafness. So he's working with mice that have the same problem.

"The idea is then to replace those genes with the correct DNA sequence and hopefully restore function," he says. This year, Holt was able to correct that problem in mouse cells.

"That was done in vitro, in a dish. And now we want to do it in the live animal," he says. "We're pretty close. That's something we have planned for the next year or so."

So for that good news, mice still have to wait a while.

(AP) ? Britain's Prince Philip returned to the royal family's country estate Tuesday, after a spell in the hospital undergoing treatment for a blocked coronary artery.

Philip, Queen Elizabeth II's 90-year-old husband, spent four nights in the hospital recovering from a successful coronary stent procedure. He was taken to Papworth, a specialist heart hospital in Cambridge, on Friday after complaining of chest pains.

It was the most serious health scare suffered by Philip, who is known to be active and robust. He has continued to appear at many engagements, most recently taking a 10-day tour of Australia with the queen.

For the first time in years he was forced to miss the royal family's traditional Christmas festivities, which include attending a morning church service, viewing the queen's annual Christmas broadcast together, and a shooting party on Boxing Day.

Philip did not speak to reporters as he was driven away from the hospital in a Range Rover Tuesday morning, though he smiled and waved to those gathered to film his departure.

"He is very much looking forward to rejoining his family," a Buckingham Palace statement said, adding that he also thanked the hospital staff for their care.

Philip will now return to Sandringham, the queen's huge private estate in rural Norfolk where the royal family retreats for the holiday season every year.

It is not yet clear if Philip's heart problem will cause a reduction in his plans to travel with the queen next year to celebrate her Diamond Jubilee. He is scheduled to make a series of trips to England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to help her mark her 60th year on the throne.

Now that Philip has been found to have coronary artery blockages, he is likely to be treated with several medications that are routinely prescribed for heart patients. The goal is to prevent future coronary artery blockages and a possible heart attack.

In most cases these medicines would include a daily dosage of aspirin to thin the blood, a statin to lower cholesterol, and possibly a beta-blocker and a separate medicine to control his blood pressure. Philip would also be expected to have his heart function tested every six months or so to check for any changes.

Philip had already announced when he turned 90 that he intended to slow down his extremely active schedule. The Diamond Jubilee plans reflected this desire, with the queen deciding to send her children and grandchildren on grueling overseas trips to Commonwealth countries while she and her husband make less demanding trips throughout the United Kingdom.

Mexican army: Ally's arrest is blow to 'El Chapo' (AP)

MEXICO CITY ? The Mexican army says it has dealt a significant blow to the powerful Sinaloa drug cartel with the arrest of the cartel leader's security chief.

The army says special military forces seized computer files and other data when they detained Felipe Cabrera Sarabia. But Chief Army spokesman Gen. Ricardo Trevillo offered few details about the hunt for cartel leader Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman.

Trevillo told a news conference Monday that Cabrera was captured without a shot being fired Friday in the capital of Sinaloa state, headquarters of the cartel allegedly run by Guzman. Cabrera's nickname is "The Engineer."

Guzman is considered to be Mexico's top drug lord and is one of the world's richest men. He has eluded authorities since his 2001 escape from prison in a laundry truck.

'Anonymous' hackers target US security think tank

The loose-knit hacking movement "Anonymous" claimed Sunday to have stolen thousands of credit card numbers and other personal information belonging to clients of U.S.-based security think tank Stratfor. One hacker said the goal was to pilfer funds from individuals' accounts to give away as Christmas donations, and some victims confirmed unauthorized transactions linked to their credit cards.

Anonymous boasted of stealing Stratfor's confidential client list, which includes entities ranging from Apple to the U.S. Air Force to the Miami Police Department, and mining it for more than 4,000 credit card numbers, passwords and home addresses.

"Not so private and secret anymore?" the group taunted in a message on Twitter, promising that the attack on Stratfor was just the beginning of a Christmas-inspired assault on a long list of targets.

Anonymous said the client list it posted was a small slice of the 200 gigabytes worth of plunder it stole from Stratfor and promised more leaks. It said it was able to get the credit details in part because Stratfor didn't bother encrypting them ? an easy-to-avoid blunder which, if true, would be a major embarrassment for any security-related company.

Austin, Texas-based Stratfor provides political, economic and military analysis to help clients reduce risk, according to a description on its YouTube page. It charges subscribers for its reports and analysis, delivered through the web, emails and videos.

Lt. Col. John Dorrian, public affairs officer for the Air Force, said that "for obvious reasons" the Air Force doesn't discuss specific vulnerabilities, threats or responses to them.

"The Air Force will continue to monitor the situation and, as always, take appropriate action as necessary to protect Air Force networks and information," he said in an email.

Miami Police Department spokesman Sgt. Freddie Cruz Jr. said that he could not confirm that the agency was a client of Stratfor, and he said he had not received any information about a security breach involving the police department.

It soon became clear that proprietary information about the companies and government agencies that subscribe to Stratfor's newsletters did not appear to be at any significant risk, and that the main threat was posed to individual employees.

Hours after publishing what it claimed was Stratfor's client list, Anonymous tweeted a link to encrypted files online with the names, addresses and account details.

"Not as many as you expected? Worry not, fellow pirates and robin hoods. These are just the "A"s," read a message posted online that encouraged readers to download a file of the hacked information.

It also linked to images online that it suggested were receipts for charitable donations made by the group manipulating the credit card data it stole.

"Thank you! Defense Intelligence Agency," read the text above one image that appeared to show a transaction summary indicating that an agency employee's information was used to donate $250 to a non-profit.

One receipt ? to the American Red Cross ? had Allen Barr's name on it.

Barr, of Austin, Texas, recently retired from the Texas Department of Banking and said he discovered last Friday that a total of $700 had been spent from his account. Barr, who has spent more than a decade dealing with cybercrime at banks, said five transactions were made in total.

"It was all charities, the Red Cross, CARE, Save the Children. So when the credit card company called my wife she wasn't sure whether I was just donating," said Barr, who wasn't aware until a reporter with the AP called that his information had been compromised when Stratfor's computers were hacked.

"It made me feel terrible. It made my wife feel terrible. We had to close the account."

Stratfor said in an email to members that it had suspended its servers and email after learning that its website had been hacked.

"We have reason to believe that the names of our corporate subscribers have been posted on other web sites," said the email, passed on to The Associated Press by subscribers. "We are diligently investigating the extent to which subscriber information may have been obtained."

The email, signed by Stratfor Chief Executive George Friedman, said the company is "working closely with law enforcement to identify who is behind the breach."

"Stratfor's relationship with its members and, in particular, the confidentiality of their subscriber information, are very important to Stratfor and me," Friedman wrote.

Repeated calls to Stratfor went unanswered Sunday and an answering machine thanked callers for contacting the "No. 1 source for global intelligence." Stratfor's website was down, with a banner saying "site is currently undergoing maintenance."

Wishing everyone a "Merry LulzXMas" ? a nod to its spinoff hacking group Lulz Security ? Anonymous also posted a link on Twitter to a site containing the email, phone number and credit number of a U.S. Homeland Security employee.

The employee, Cody Sultenfuss, said he had no warning before his details were posted.

"They took money I did not have," he told the AP in a series of emails, which did not specify the amount taken. "I think 'Why me?' I am not rich."

One member of the hacking group, who uses the handle AnonymousAbu on Twitter, claimed that more than 90,000 credit cards from law enforcement, the intelligence community and journalists ? "corporate/exec accounts of people like Fox" news ? had been hacked and used to "steal a million dollars" and make donations.

It was impossible to verify where credit card details were used. Fox News was not on the excerpted list of Stratfor members posted online, but other media organizations including MSNBC and Al-Jazeera English appeared in the file.

Anonymous warned it has "enough targets lined up to extend the fun fun fun of LulzXmas through the entire next week."

The group has previously claimed responsibility for attacks on companies such as Visa, MasterCard and PayPal, as well as others in the music industry and the Church of Scientology.

(AP) ? North Korea's state media on Monday called Kim Jong Il's heir the head of the ruling Workers' Party Central Committee, which would give Kim Jong Un power over one of the country's highest decision-making bodies more than a week after his father's death.

The reference in a commentary by the North's main Rodong Sinmun newspaper came as two groups of prominent South Koreans with ties to Pyongyang traveled to North Korea to pay respects to Kim Jong Il, who is being mourned by millions in his homeland.

North Korean soldiers, Rodong Sinmun said, are upholding a slogan urging them to dedicate their lives to protect the committee headed by Kim Jong Un. The slogan means that Kim will likely be appointed as the party's general secretary, one of the country's highest positions.

North Korea is in official mourning for Kim until after a memorial Thursday. But the country is also offering hints about Kim Jong Un's rise as ruler. North Korea began hailing him as "supreme leader" of the 1.2-million strong military over the weekend.

Kim Jong Un, who is in his late 20s and was unveiled in September 2010 as his father's choice as successor, will be the third-generation Kim to rule the communist nation of 24 million.

At least 61 dead in northeast Nigeria violence (AP)

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria ? At least 61 people have been killed during several days of fighting in northeast Nigeria between security forces and a radical Muslim sect responsible for a series of increasingly bloody attacks in Africa's most populous nation, authorities said Saturday.

The fighting between suspected members of the sect known as Boko Haram and a joint task force of police and military began Thursday in Borno and Yobe states in Nigeria's arid northeast corner bordering Cameroon, Chad and Niger. The fighting left residents cowering in their homes amid gunfire and explosions.

At least 50 people have died in Damaturu and Potiskum in Yobe state during the fighting, local police commissioner Lawan Tanko told The Associated Press on Saturday. In Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state, a mortuary official who requested anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter told the AP at least 11 bodies had been brought in from the fighting.

The violence left at least two senior police officers dead in Yobe state, while a military spokesman in Borno said that three churches had been bombed during attacks there.

In Yobe state, the fighting became so intense that the military ordered those living in a neighborhood surrounding Damaturu's central mosque to evacuate. After a deadline, soldiers riding in armored personnel carriers and tanks drove into the neighborhood shooting, Tanko said.

"We were able to kill 12 of the Boko Haram armed sect and bombers," Tanko said. The police commissioner said officers also recovered Kalashnikov rifles, ammunition and explosives.

Boko Haram has launched a series of bombings against Nigeria's weak central government over the last year in its campaign to implement strict Shariah law across the nation of more than 160 million people home to both Christians and Muslims.

Boko Haram claimed responsibility for a Nov. 4 attack on Damaturu, Yobe state's capital, that killed more than 100 people. The group also claimed the Aug. 24 suicide car bombing of the U.N. headquarters in Nigeria's capital that killed 24 people and wounded 116 others.

Little is known about the sources of Boko Haram's support, though its members recently began carrying out a wave of bank robberies in the north. Police stations also have been bombed and officers killed.

Boko Haram has splintered into three factions, with one wing increasingly willing to kill as it maintains contact with terror groups in North Africa and Somalia, diplomats and security sources say.

The sect is responsible for more than 450 killings in Nigeria this year alone, according to an AP count.

Steve Jobs - "Billion Dollar Hippy" BBC Documentary

Posted by Tom Foremski - December 20, 2011

The BBC's documentary "Billion Dollar Hippy" about Steve Jobs has some great content even for those that already know a lot about Steve Jobs.

One very interesting point is made by Larry Tesler, a former Xerox PARC researcher. Apple has often been accused of stealing ideas from Xerox PARC but Mr Tesler points out (around 19.40 minutes) that PARC did not invent the mouse or graphical user interface, that they had been around for more than 15 years.

There's a lot of yelling in the Steve Jobs story. "Billion Dollar Uptight Hippy" might be a better title.

Protecting Yourself Financially: Types of Insurance a Man Needs ...

Editor?s Note: This is a guest post from Jeff Rose.?

The day we were issued our IBA?s (Interceptor Body Armor or Flak Jacket), I could feel my knees and lower back aching already. ??Having to lug around an extra 16 pounds everywhere we went, on top of all the other gear we were issued, was more than cumbersome?it sucked.

But the nature of the situation demanded it?we were at war. The Kevlar in our IBA and helmets, our up-armored humvees, and our weapons were there for one reason?protection.? Or stated another way: insurance.

For the entire year I was in Iraq, I hated wearing that stupid battle vest. ?It was heavy; it was hot; it was just flat out annoying. ?Despite my negative feelings towards it, I couldn?t deny that it saved lives. ??As they say in the military, it was a ?necessary evil.?

That same concept can be applied to insurance.

Raise your hand if you enjoy getting an insurance premium bill in the mail? ?Didn?t think so.

There are some forms of insurance you just can?t live without. Car insurance is mandatory in all states, homeowners insurance is required if you carry a mortgage, and any parent will tell you that medical insurance is crucial.

Face it, insurance is a ?necessary evil.?

With rising costs hitting all of these necessary protections, it pays to make the most of every dollar.

Here?s a look at the types of insurance every man should own.

Car Insurance

Since you have absolutely no choice about carrying car insurance, you might as well shop around to find the best deal. I know that there are many advertisements trying to entice you to change companies, but before you do that, compare what you are getting right now to what they are offering. Companies frequently ?save? you money by providing lesser coverage; in my book that is no savings. Shop around and do it early, insurance companies will almost always match any legitimate offers you find.

The quickest and easiest way to drop those premiums is to raise your deductible. By increasing your deductible from $200 to $500, you can save 30% on your insurance premiums. Make sure to set aside the money needed if you do have an accident and need to produce the higher deductible.

Ask about discounts. Teen drivers usually get a discount for good grades or certain types of driver?s education programs. If you don?t drive much, or your job is just a couple of miles from home, you may be eligible to get a low-mileage deduction.

Also, consult your insurance agent when purchasing a new vehicle so you know in advance which cars cost less to insure. Some companies offer lower deductibles for each year you go without having a claim, so make sure you ask questions because it could save you money in the long term.

Homeowners Insurance

Just like auto insurance, increasing your deductible on homeowners insurance will decrease your premiums. Many companies will offer discounts to customers who purchase multiple policies with them, so bundle your car and homeowners insurance to save some money.

Only insure your home, not the land for replacement costs in case of disaster. This common mistake costs many people money. You won?t have to replace the land, just the building, so check your policy to make sure you are insuring only what you need.

Another thing to consider is staying with a company for the long haul since they may offer loyalty discounts. Improving your home?s security and disaster resistance will generally garner you some deductions as well.

Other Mistakes to Avoid

Not Buying Enough Homeowners Insurance: Many homes today are underinsured. There are many reasons for this; nonetheless, you do not want to be in this position in case a disaster strikes. ?Our area was hit with an ?inland hurricane? that caused millions of dollars of damage to our community. ?I have heard of many horror stories where homeowners did not have the proper coverage and were left with paying all the bills on their own to get their home fixed.

Not Upgrading the Policy When Changes Are Made: One reason that homes are underinsured is because there is no attempt to upgrade the policy. Any time you make any major additions to your home, it?s a good time to review your policy and make sure you have the proper coverage.

Not Having a Current Home Inventory: When we were returning home from Iraq, we had to ship most of our personal things through a Connex. ?We were required to make a detailed list of everything in our tote boxes in the event something was lost or broken. ?Have you done something similar for the content of your home? ?Most homeowners have not.

Without an inventory, you may only receive a tiny fraction of the value. Avoid this by taking a walk-through video of your home and talking about the larger items. Pictures will be needed, as well as a list of the cost and replacement value of each item. ?One tip that I found really interesting is to upload your walk-through video to YouTube (private settings please?no reason to broadcast to thieves all the valuables in your home!).? That way you?ll always have the footage, even if your house is completely destroyed.

Medical Insurance

Many people simply can?t afford private medical insurance. Before you raise your hands in frustration and walk away, you need to realize that a major medical bill can bankrupt your family. ?Something is better than nothing. Many states now offer basic health insurance based upon income levels; call your state offices for more information.

Again, raising your deductible will help if you have insurance but are struggling to pay for it. See what kinds of plans your company offers, and if you can get insurance through your work. Compare the health plans and make sure you are comparing apples to apples, even with the complicated wording of many policies. Also, take advantage of health savings accounts that let you put aside money to pay for medical expenses, tax free.

Since starting my own business a few years ago, we?ve been covered on my wife?s plan through her job. ?With her recently making the decision to be a stay-at-home mom, we were forced to get private insurance. ??Talk about an experience!

We called several local agents and also used eHealthInsurance.com to make sure we got exactly what we needed. ??It took a lot of note taking, phone calls, and asking tons of questions, but we finally got what we were looking for.

Keeping on top of your insurance costs and options will save you money immediately and in the long run. The key is to do some comparison shopping.

Editor?s Note: Don?t understand how health insurance works? Check out our Young Man?s Guide to Health Insurance.

Life Insurance

According to a recent study, over 35 million U.S. household have no life insurance whatsoever. None. ?Zilch. ?Nada. ?Really?

How do you know if you need life insurance? If someone would suffer financially if you died, you very likely need it.

For you men that don?t have any life insurance, face it: you are not Superman! ??There is about a 100% chance you are going to die, so you might as well get used to the idea.

Most people don?t buy life insurance because they think it costs too much. ?Not true! ?A healthy 35-year-old man can get $500,000 of term insurance for 20 years for the price of 6 Double-Doubles per month at In-N-Out Burger.? While you won?t get the same immediate gratification when making the payment, you can rest assured that your family is taken care of.

If you think you?re all good because you have life insurance with your job, think again. ??What if you lose or change jobs? ??Now you?re at the risk of your new employer not offering it and then being forced to find it on your own. ??It?s better to go ahead and buy a 20 or 30 year term life insurance policy now so that you?ll never be faced with that predicament.

Suggested Types of Insurance

While the types of insurance listed above are ones every man really should own, these next two are policies I know everyone is not going to go for, but that I strongly recommend having.

Disability Insurance

While I was easily convinced that I needed every insurance above, I initially balked at the idea of getting disability insurance. ??I tried to convince myself that I didn?t need it, but let?s face it?statistics don?t lie. ?Check out these stats:

One out of every seven workers will suffer a five-year or longer period of disability before age 65, and if you?re 35 now, your chances of experiencing a three-month or longer disability before you reach age 65 are 50%, according to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC). If you?re 45, the figure is 44%.

How Much Disability Income Insurance Do You Need? The key to determining your needs is to assess how much you would be required to spend during each week or month that you would be unable to earn your normal pay. For example, if you would need 80% of your pretax earnings but your group policy would only pay an amount equal to 60%, then you may need additional coverage.

Disability insurance can be tricky, so it?s important to ask the right questions. ?This article from the New York Times addresses the key questions to ask before purchasing the policy. Here are a few examples:

  • What percentage of my income will you replace if I become disabled?
  • Will you cover commissions or bonuses on top of a base salary?
  • Can the payout go up as my income goes up in the future?

Before purchasing my long term disability policy, I made sure to shop around and compare the features. One of the companies that I looked into would only get me a monthly benefit that was 40% less per month and whose premiums were twice as much. ??So yes, it does pay to shop around.

Umbrella Policy

How many times have you been in a situation where a sudden downpour leaves you soaked and thinking about how much you wished you had an umbrella?? For me, too many. ?An umbrella policy will give you that added protection and keep you ?dry? from any major incidents.

How it works. ?An umbrella insurance policy essentially rests on your existing insurance policies for your vehicles and your home. They provide extra protection in the event of a situation not fully covered by your normal insurance. Umbrella policies cover the gaps left by your existing insurance coverage.

For instance, let?s say you are sued for liability in an auto accident and the judgment is declared against you for $500,000, but you only have $200,000 worth of liability coverage. The rest of the money would have to come out of your own pocket unless you had the umbrella coverage to fall back on. Without the additional umbrella insurance protection, you are susceptible to losing all of your assets to pay off the outstanding debts, including your home.

Personal umbrella insurance policies are often misinterpreted by consumers and are surrounded by myths so often that people can fail to recognize the importance of having additional coverage when they need it most. I?m amazed at the number of people I come across that don?t really understand the basics and benefits of umbrella policies.

Umbrella insurance policies are thought to be too expensive to afford for average-income consumers and are too complicated to fit in with the insurance coverage you already have. But for many, the added protection of an umbrella policy may be just what your family needs.

Some real life examples. ?It?s easier to illustrate how an umbrella policy would work using real life situations. ??An article by CBS MarketWatch gives several instances that are very common. ?Here are some of the examples that could easily happen to anybody.

  • You throw a party at your home where alcohol was involved and minors were present. ?The minor has a few drinks without you knowing and drives home and gets in a wreck. ??You could be on the hook even if you didn?t provide the alcohol.
  • You act as chaperone of young kids on a field trip to a park where one of the kids gets injured. ??The parent of the child claims that your kid doesn?t like their kid and that?s why you let him get hurt.
  • You?re driving home from work and collide with a company truck hauling very expensive equipment.
  • Your child borrows a friend?s car to run to McDonald?s to grab something to eat. ??While hurrying to get back they run a stop sign and hit a mini-van with a family of four.

The right umbrella policy could protect you from the incidents listed above.

What?s the cost? For $1 million in coverage, the cost should be around $150-$200 (mine was $180) a year. For each additional $1 million in coverage, you should expect to pay an additional $100.

***

Think you?re less of man, because you have insurance? ?Don?t. ?In Iraq, all it took was one IED blowing up or a bullet whizzing by to appreciate the protection we had with our equipment. ?Don?t get caught with your guard down and make sure you?re properly insured.

Transformer Optimus Prime wants his name back, right now preferably

In a cunning bid to remind the adult world of its long-lost childhood, in which even the most vacuous fictional characters could somehow seem magical, Hasbro has suddenly decided to sue ASUS over its 'Transformer Prime' branding. It doesn't matter that the Transformer Prime really does transform -- you know, in real-life -- or that it exists in a non-competing market, or that the latest Transformers movie was a complete waste of everybody's time. Nope, Hasbro still feels the need to "aggressively protect its brands and products" from illusory enemies, and it's fully prepared to threaten ASUS with a sales injunction until some sort of conciliatory gesture appears on its bank statement. If this lawsuit takes hold -- please, not another Düsseldorf -- then we promise that our future children will never buy, watch or touch a single Hasbro product. Except maybe that R2-D2 version of Operation, which is pretty sweet.

Gay couple sue Hawaii B&B, claim discrimination

Two Southern California women filed a lawsuit Monday against a Hawaii bed and breakfast, saying the business denied them a room because they are gay.

Aloha Bed & Breakfast discriminated against Diane Cervelli and Taeko Bufford, a couple living in Long Beach, Calif., claims the lawsuit filed on behalf of the women by Lambda Legal in First Circuit Court in Honolulu.

Cervelli, 42, called the business in 2007 to book a room because it's in Hawaii Kai, the same east Honolulu neighborhood where the friend they were visiting lived. When she specified they would need one bed, the owner asked if they are lesbians. Cervelli responded truthfully and the owner said she was uncomfortable having lesbians in her house because of her religious views, the lawsuit said.

Refusing to let the couple book a room was solely based on their sexual orientation because the owner indicated that if they were married, she would not have allowed them to stay there, said their attorney, Peter Renn of Lambda Legal's Los Angeles office. She also would have a problem if they were an unmarried heterosexual couple, he said.

As winter approaches, it may be helpful to know which airports savvy skiers and snowboarders seek out ? and where a boarding pass may be exchanged for a free lift ticket.

    3. Frustrated flier claims baggage runaround, sues Delta
    4. 4 TSA agents fired for failing to properly screen bags

The lawsuit claims the business violated Hawaii's public accommodation law prohibiting any inn or other establishment that provides lodging from discriminating based on sexual orientation, race, sex, gender identity or expression, religion, ancestry or disability. Lambda Legal said there are 21 states that have public accommodation laws that protect against sexual orientation discrimination.

The couple ended up booking a room in Waikiki and the experience with the bed and breakfast "soured" their trip, Cervelli said Monday while in Honolulu with Bufford, 28. "In my past experiences in Hawaii, people have been so friendly," she said. "It was just hurtful. It made me feel we weren't good enough."

Reached by phone, owner Phyllis Young declined to comment and referred questions to her attorney. Honolulu attorney Jim Hochberg said he is representing her on behalf of the Alliance Defense Fund, an organization of attorneys representing people whose religious freedom is infringed. He said he hadn't yet seen the complaint.

According to the lawsuit, the Hawaii Civil Rights Commission investigated. During the investigation Young told the commission homosexuality is "detestable" and "defiles our land." The commission issued a notice of "reasonable cause to believe that unlawful discriminatory practices have been committed" and notified the couple of their right to sue.

The lawsuit wants the business to be ordered to comply with the law, for the court to issue a declaration making clear what happened was illegal and for the couple to be awarded unspecified monetary compensation, Renn said: "No amount of money is going to erase the humiliation and pain."

Renn said Lambda Legal is also looking into whether the bed and breakfast is licensed to operate. Aloha Bed & Breakfast is not on a list of properties approved for transient vacation unit or bed and breakfast use that have been issued nonconforming use certificates by Honolulu's Department of Planning and Permitting.

House easily passes spending bill (Politico)

Moving with surprising speed, the House gave final approval Friday to a more than $1 trillion budget bill that fills in the blank spaces of the August debt accords and sets a new template for government spending through the 2012 elections.

The strong 296-121 bipartisan vote removes any remaining threat of a shutdown this weekend and Senate passage is now expected Saturday afternoon. As added insurance ?and to allow time for the Capitol?s enrollment clerks to complete the processing of the bill? a stopgap resolution to keep agencies funded through Dec. 23 was also approved and sent onto the Senate.

Filling over 1,200 pages, the appropriations giant is remarkable for its reach, covering the heart of President Barack Obama?s domestic priorities, the Pentagon, and foreign aid plus tens of billions more related to the war in Afghanistan.

The final details were not released until early Thursday morning and even after that, changes were still being made for the White House less than 24 hours before the Friday?s House vote. But Republicans?who had long complained of Democrats doing the same thing?shrugged off any inconsistency, and the floor debate was remarkably compressed and the outcome never in serious doubt.

?There ought to be a portion of humility for all of us to understand that the legislative process is difficult,? said House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.), gently reminding the GOP of its past rage at him when Democrats were in power. ?I rise in strong support of this bill, and I urge my colleagues to support this piece of legislation. None of them have read it. Not one of us has read every page of this bill.?

But for history, reading may be required. Indeed, after the burst of stimulus spending at the beginning of Obama?s first year, Washington is now very much a government retrenching after a year of real cuts that have rolled back domestic appropriations to Bush-era levels when adjusted for inflation.

That translates into a roughly 10 percent cut from spending levels last January when Republicans took over the House, and under the August debt agreement, this will become a new plateau stretching into the future with annual growth pegged below the rate of inflation.

Conservatives remain unhappy that the change has not been greater, and the new $1.043 trillion cap for 2012 is truly a retreat from the much deeper cuts proposed by the House Republicans? budge resolution last April. Then again, just a year ago Democrats were proposing their own omnibus bill, complete with parochial earmarks and spending $73 billion higher for non-defense programs.

The change now is a real victory for the House GOP with at least two caveats.

First, to a surprising degree the leadership has replaced spending earmarks with often special interest policy riders that are earmarks themselves in many respects. Coal, oil, paper and pulp companies, timber and Wall Street all were players behind the scene.

Second, the party is still struggling and prone to shortcuts as it copes with the caps set in August for security funding and defense.

Overseas contingency funds, ostensibly for military operations in Afghanistan and other theaters, have become a safety valve to pay for an ever larger share of core Pentagon costs. And much as Republicans have criticized Obama?s decision to bring more American forces home, the resulting savings have helped the GOP sustain what has become a very costly military ? amid spending cuts elsewhere.

The same war savings have also helped the GOP leadership steer around the problem of explaining the extra disaster aid money allowed under the August accords?outside the budget caps.

Prior to Friday, Congress had already approved about $2.4 billion in such assistance, and on a separate 351-67 vote Friday, the House approved an additional $8.1 billion for FEMA and the Army Corps of Engineers to deal with the aftermath of flooding and storms this past year.

Justice Department says Seattle police used excessive force (Reuters)

Please note strong language in second paragraph.

SEATTLE (Reuters) ? Seattle police officers used excessive force over the last two years and were too quick to resort to using their batons and other weapons, the U.S. Justice Department said on Friday.

The city's police has been criticized for its practices, especially after a native American woodcarver was shot dead by an officer without appearing to pose a threat, and police were caught on video stomping on and threatening to "beat the Mexican piss" out of a prone suspect.

A review by the Justice Department found that when Seattle officers used force between 2009 and April 2011, nearly 20 percent of the time it was excessive and when they used their batons, more than half the time it was unnecessary or excessive.

"The problems within SPD (Seattle Police Department) have been present for many years and will take time to fix," said Thomas Perez, head of the Justice Department's civil rights division. The department said the Seattle police force was already implementing reforms.

This is the second report about misconduct about police forces in as many days. The Justice Department issued a scathing report on Thursday that said the sheriff's office in Phoenix, Arizona regularly engaged in racial profiling and making unlawful arrests.

In Seattle, the Justice Department said there were deficiencies in oversight, policies and training for officers on how and when to use force and their weapons like batons and flashlights.

The city appointed a new police chief, John Diaz, in August 2010.

Nearly two dozen police departments nationwide are under review by the Justice Department, including Miami; Puerto Rico; Newark, New Jersey; New Orleans; and Maricopa county, Arizona.
