The Winner of The Royal Berkshire Poetry Competition 2012

Hosted by Bill Buckley, BBC Radio presenter, the Poetry Raw event for TRBPoetry Competition to announce the 2012 winner was a huge success. Bill?reported the judges all agreed, when a metaphorical gun was held to their heads and they had to choose on a winner, that this was a unanimous decision.

?Totally love it.? Gloriously scuzzy first verse.? Second verse great contrast.? Love that the poet didn?t feel the need to regularise the length of the verses or lines, ?Whispers and texts?, of course, echoes the noise trains used to make over tracks ? brilliant!? I was??there?!?? Brilliant for reading aloud.? 10/10?

The Last Train

?

I am on a train at night next to a man with a
Timetable tattooed on his arm.
He points at his arm and says, ?We?re late?.
Remain calm, submit to the heat.
Not travelling but entombed
In a wash of words, noise and sweat.
Swimming in brown grease, paper and meat.
A cold coffee cup slips around our feet.
Broken newspapers yellow in neon light
As the train fills with mad dogs, big sticks and cold eyes.
Whispers and texts,
Whispers and texts.

I am on a train at night.
Next to a woman with useless shopping.
She points at her bags and says ?I couldn?t resist?
And we celebrate this.
Fusing like broken microchips,
Basking in the smell of burning plastic.
The rustle of sales and shops and bliss
Fusing like the sparks of wheel and rust.

Commuting into dust
As signals crack and click and fail.

6 and 9 to 17
Rusted through red railings.

Oil black stones and coffee cups.
Whispers and texts,
Whispers and texts.

Rotoworld: Top Combine risers? |? And fallers

This is a rundown of 15 players who either helped or solidified their draft stock by testing well at the 2013 Scouting Combine. We'll start off with seven bigger-named prospects before digging a bit deeper on 8-15.

1. BYU DE Ziggy Ansah -- Ansah's stock has been rising since the January 26 Senior Bowl game, which he single-handedly took over. In Indy, Ansah measured 6-foot-5 1/4 and 271 pounds with 35 1/8-inch arms. His 4.63 forty time was sixth fastest among the 37 defensive linemen who ran, and Ansah's 34 1/2-inch vertical leap tied for seventh. When running the forty, only LSU's Barkevious Mingo cleared ten yards at a faster pace than Ansah (1.56). His 9-foot-10 broad jump also ranked in the top ten. Ansah has locked himself in as a single-digit pick.

Realistic Landing Spots: Jaguars at No. 2, Raiders at No. 3, Lions at No. 5.

2. Tennessee WR Justin Hunter -- Hunter weighed in at a relatively slight 6-foot-4, 196 in an effort to improve his workout measurables. It worked. Hunter's 4.44 forty was outdone by only eight of the 35 receivers who ran, and all by wideouts at least an inch and a half shorter than Hunter. Even more impressive were Hunter's vertical (39 1/2") and broad jump (11-foot-4), which each either ranked first or tied Hunter for first in his position group. Despite disappointing 2012 game film coming off an ACL tear, Hunter has vaulted himself back into the first-round discussion.

Realistic Landing Spots: Texans at No. 27, Patriots at No. 29, Jets at No. 39.

3. Notre Dame TE Tyler Eifert -- If there was any doubt about Eifert's athleticism entering the Combine, he erased it in Indy. 19 tight ends worked out, and Eifert ranked fourth in forty time (4.68), third in bench-press reps (22), second in vertical leap (35 1/2"), third in 20-yard shuttle time (4.32), and second in the 60-yard shuttle (11.52). He was also the only tight end to break seven seconds in the three-cone drill (6.92). Ideally built at 6-foot-5 1/2, 250 with 33 1/8-inch arms, Eifert has separated himself from Zach Ertz as the lone surefire first-rounder in this tight end class.

Realistic Landing Spots: Bucs at No. 13, Bears at No. 20, Falcons at No. 30.

4. Oklahoma LT Lane Johnson -- Johnson was considered a possible top-ten pick before the Combine, but he might push for the top seven now. Among the 48 offensive linemen who took part, Johnson ranked second in forty time (4.72), first in the ten-yard split (1.61), second in vertical leap (34"), fifth in the 20-yard shuttle (4.52), and second in the three-cone drill (7.31). He also benched 225 pounds 28 times with vine-like 35 1/4-inch arms. Johnson offers ideal athleticism and build (6-foot-6, 303) for an NFL left tackle. He's giving Luke Joeckel and Eric Fisher a run for their money.

Realistic Landing Spots: Cardinals at No. 7, Chargers at No. 11, Dolphins at No. 12.

5. LSU DE/LB Barkevious Mingo -- Mingo's game has kinks that need refinement -- he tends to play too high and must add strength -- but he is a highly explosive athlete. At 6-foot-4, 241, Mingo ranked first among all defensive linemen in the ten-yard split (1.55) and second in the forty (4.58), demonstrating sensational short-area burst in addition to long speed. Mingo's 10-foot-8 broad jump tied for first, and his 37-inch vertical was second best at his position. Teams that run 3-4 defenses will love Mingo's blend of length (33 3/4-inch arms) and sky-high upside.

Realistic Landing Spots: Jets at No. 9, Saints at No. 15, Steelers at No. 17.

6. Washington CB Desmond Trufant -- Marcus' younger brother is long and lean at 6-foot, 190, and recovery speed isn't going to be a problem. Trufant's 4.38 forty was third fastest among defensive backs at the Combine, and his 3.85 time in the 20-yard shuttle ranked second. His broad jump (10-foot-5) and vertical (37 1/2") were respectable if not elite. On the heels of a standout Senior Bowl, Trufant is making a case to be the draft's No. 2 corner behind Dee Milliner.

Realistic Landing Spots: Dolphins at No. 12, Bucs at No. 13, Panthers at No. 14.

7. Oregon LB Dion Jordan -- Some teams use the Combine to create first impressions, before going back to watch tape until April's draft. Clubs of that mindset will be initially smitten with Jordan. At 6-foot-6 1/4, 248, with 33 7/8-inch arms, he has a freaky size-athleticism combo. His 4.60 forty tied for third among defensive linemen, and Jordan ranked third behind only Mingo and Ansah in the ten-yard split (1.57). His 10-foot-2 broad jump was fourth best at the position. Jordan regularly lined up over the slot receiver in Oregon's defense and might be the most pro-ready cover linebacker in the draft. Rotoworld draft guru Josh Norris has likened him to Julian Peterson.

Realistic Landing Spots: Eagles at No. 4, Browns at No. 6, Jets at No. 9.

8. Arkansas RB Knile Davis -- Davis rushed for just 377 yards on 112 carries (3.37 YPC) coming off a major ankle injury in 2012, but some of his measurables indicate he could be a gem. Weighing in at a rocked-up 5-foot-11 3/8 and 227 pounds, Davis ran the second fastest forty time (4.37) and second best ten-yard split (1.49) among running backs in Indy. He also ranked second in bench reps (31) and ninth in the broad jump (10-foot-1). More sobering were Davis' 20-yard shuttle (4.38) and three-cone times (6.96), which ranked 15th-of-24 and 11th-of-23 participants, respectively. Obvious concerns for Davis are his agility, small hands (8 5/8"), and poor production.

Realistic Landing Spots: Titans, Falcons, Cowboys in the fifth round.

9. Arkansas-Pine Bluff OT Terron Armstead -- Armstead set a new Combine record for offensive linemen with a 4.71 forty, and his 1.64 ten-yard split ranked second behind only Lane Johnson. With lengthy 34-inch arms, 6-foot-4 3/4, 306-pound Armstead also repped 225 pounds 31 times on the bench. His 34 1/2-inch vertical leap again paced the O-Line field, and Armstead tied for third in the broad jump at 9-foot-4. Armstead is considered raw coming out of a small school, but NFL teams will be enamored by his untapped potential and rare athleticism at his size.

Realistic Landing Spots: Redskins at No. 51, Dolphins at No. 54, Seahawks at No. 56.

10. SMU DE Margus Hunt -- Hunt is an extremely raw, 26-year-old former track and field junior Olympian. In terms of being a legitimate NFL prospect, he certainly has the workout-wonder part down. A top D-Line performer in essentially every measurable, 6-foot-8, 277-pound Hunt finished third in the forty (4.60), first on the bench (38 reps), seventh in the broad jump (10-foot-1), ninth in the ten-yard split (1.62), and seventh in the vertical leap (34 1/2") among 54 defensive linemen who showed up in Indy. Old, unlikely to contribute as a rookie, and limited to one position (end) in one scheme (3-4) with little to no quality football film, Hunt will likely be targeted as a mid- to late-round project. There was even post-Combine buzz that some clubs prefer Hunt on offense, playing tight end.

Realistic Landing Spots: Chiefs, Browns, 49ers in the sixth round.

11. Mississippi State CB Darius Slay -- Overshadowed by more heralded teammate Johnthan Banks in college, Slay turned heads when he was credited with the fastest forty time among cornerbacks (4.36). Measuring in at 5-foot-11 7/8 and 192 pounds, Slay also produced a 10-foot-4 broad jump, 1.53 ten-yard split, and 6.90 three-cone time. Little known but no slouch, Slay led the Bulldogs in interceptions (5) last season and is a sleeper to be drafted in the top 75.

Realistic Landing Spots: Bucs at No. 73, 49ers at No. 74, Chargers at No. 76.

12. Rice TE Vance McDonald -- McDonald amassed 119 receptions for 1,504 yards and 15 career touchdowns in Rice's spread offense, and he now boasts workout numbers to support his production. At 6-foot-4 1/8 and 267 pounds, McDonald paced his position on the bench with 31 reps despite measuring in with the longest arms (34 3/8") among all tight ends at the Combine. McDonald also ranked fifth in the forty (4.69), sixth in the vertical (33 1/2"), fourth in the broad jump (9-foot-8), and third in the three-cone drill (7.08). McDonald is headed for the second round.

Realistic Landing Spots: Rams at No. 46, Bears at No. 50, Redskins at No. 51.

13. Texas A&M WR Ryan Swope -- Swope was a possession receiver at A&M, averaging 12.4 career yards per catch, but has drawn Eric Decker comparisons during draft season. He helped himself greatly at the Combine with a 4.34 forty, tying Tavon Austin for second fastest by a receiver after weighing in at 6-foot, 205. Swope also showed well with a 37-inch vertical (fifth best among wideouts), 10-foot-5 broad jump (sixth), and 6.76 three-cone time (sixth). Teams will likely recheck Swope's game tape after the performance. He may begin to generate second-day grades.

Realistic Landing Spots: Bills at No. 71, Jets at No. 72, Dolphins at No. 77.

14. Arkansas TE Chris Gragg -- Gragg needed a way to open eyes after an injury-ruined senior year, and he accomplished that in Indy. At 6-foot-2 3/4 and 244 pounds, Gragg paced the tight end field in forty time (4.50), ten-yard split (1.53), and vertical leap (37 1/2"). Only two tight ends were more efficient in the three-cone drill (7.07), and Gragg also showed adequate strength on the bench with 18 reps of 225 with 33 5/8-inch arms. Gragg caught 41 passes as a junior, so he's not entirely without production. The head-turning Combine is very likely to get Gragg drafted.

Realistic Landing Spots: 49ers, Falcons, Redskins in the fifth round.

15. Cal CB Steve Williams -- Not taken especially seriously in draft circles after leaving school a year early, Williams will get noticed off his Combine. The Cal Bears' 2012 Defensive MVP finished tied for first in the vertical leap (40 1/2"), eighth in the broad jump (10-foot-8), and ninth in forty time (4.42) among 54 cornerbacks. Williams was just an honorable mention pick in the Pac 12 as a junior. At a coveted NFL position, he may have vaulted his stock from a UDFA to fourth- or fifth-rounder.

Realistic Landing Spots: Ravens, Steelers, Jaguars in the fifth round.

No Health Insurance? No Classes. Wait? what? | UNLV CSUN

No Health Insurance? No Classes. Wait? what?
Student Body President Mark Ciavola
February 26, 2013

For years, UNLV students have had to deal with a bad economy and job market, budget cuts, tuition and fee increases, less than stellar student services, a lack of class sections, GAs teaching instead of professors, and more. But nothing comes close to the staggering audacity of ?Mandatory Health Insurance as a Condition of Enrollment.?

When the NSHE Board of Regents meet this Thursday, they will be considering a proposal which ? if passed ? would allow institutions in Nevada to require that students prove they have health insurance in order to enroll in classes. What?s worse? They?d have to prove it every single semester.

As if this wasn?t outrageous enough, the reasons don?t add up.

In a committee meeting, held to determine the effects of this policy on various UNLV departments, I was told that the reasons were as follows:

Reasons vs. Reality

Reason #1. In order to offer a low-cost Student Health Insurance Plan at UNLV, there need to be more students enrolled in the plan to lower premiums.

Reason #2. The new national health care law requires everyone to have health insurance, so this policy would be in line with the new law.

Reason #3. Having students without insurance on campus, or not offering students health insurance on campus, could result in increased liability for the university.

Here?s the reality:

Reality #1: Most students don?t know about the Student Health Insurance Plan because it isn?t advertised. Until it is advertised, it?s difficult to complain about low enrollment and be taken seriously. I suggested to the committee that we add a page during enrollment on MyUNLV that advertises the health insurance plan, with an opt-in/opt-out feature. That way, it is guaranteed to be advertised to every student.

Reality #2: It is not UNLV?s responsibility to enforce the new federal health care law. Furthermore, if a student chooses to pay the penalty ($750) rather than purchase health insurance ($2,000), they should still be able to take classes at UNLV. Under this new measure they wouldn?t be able to. That?s just wrong.

Reality #3: The opt-in/opt-out feature during enrollment will solve this problem. However, the fact that options like an opt-in/out and advertising to students were not considered prior to jumping to mandatory health insurance as a condition of enrollment is disturbing.

I?m happy to say that the CSUN Senate, last Thursday, unanimously passed a resolution opposing Mandatory Health Insurance as a Condition of Enrollment. Furthermore, I will be contacting all of the NSHE Board of Regents regarding this issue, and speaking out against it at their meeting this Thursday.

I will keep students up to date on this issue, as it is an important one that affects us all. The cost of education is high enough without adding this unnecessary burden. I, for one, am tired of the quality of our education and student services decreasing while our tuition and fees continue to rise. We?ve been fortunate that tuition has remained steady for the past year and that we have been able to stop certain fees from being passed. However, we need to continue that fight and ensure that the students are represented properly on these issues.

Stay tuned!

Obama, top lawmakers to meet Friday on budget cuts

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The White House conceded Wednesday that efforts to avoid automatic budget cuts are unlikely to succeed before they kick in and is initiating new talks with congressional leaders to confront seemingly intractable tax-and-spend issues.

President Barack Obama will meet at the White House Friday with House and Senate leaders of both parties several hours after the deadline for averting the cuts, known in Washington-speak as a "sequester," has passed. This would put the White House and Congress essentially in the position of looking past the cuts to the next looming fiscal showdown: A March 27 deadline to continue government operations or force a government shutdown.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said the White House talks, arranged Tuesday, are designed to be a "constructive discussion" about how to keep the cuts from having harmful consequences. Obama has been calling for a mix of spending cuts and tax increases to achieve deficit reduction goals.

The White House has warned that the $85 billion in cuts could affect everything from commercial flights to classrooms and meat inspections. The cuts would slash domestic and defense spending, leading to forced unpaid days off for hundreds of thousands of government workers.

The impact won't be immediate. Federal workers would be notified next week that they will have to take up to a day every week off without pay, but the furloughs won't start for a month due to notification requirements. That will give negotiators some breathing room to keep working on a deal.

The Senate planned to vote on a Democratic stop gap measure on Thursday that would forestall the automatic cuts through the end of the year. It would replace them with longer-term cuts to the Pentagon and cash payments to farmers, and by installing a minimum 30 percent tax rate on income exceeding $1 million.

But Republicans oppose tax increases and will likely block the measure. Carney argued that such opposition would mean the cuts, known as a sequester in budget terms, would be the responsibility of Republicans.

Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell said Friday's session will focus on ways to reduce government spending, but he also said he will not back down on his opposition to any new revenues. McConnell, along with House Speaker John Boehner, Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid and House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi, will attend meeting at the White House.

"We can either secure those reductions more intelligently, or we can do it the president's way with across-the board cuts. But one thing Americans simply will not accept is another tax increase to replace spending reductions we already agreed to," said McConnell, R-Ky.

Carney said Obama also spoke briefly with congressional leaders Wednesday ahead of a ceremony in the Capitol to unveil a statue of civil rights heroine Rosa Parks. Obama and House Speaker John Boehner jointly led the unveiling, standing with the statue between them as they grasped and pulled in opposite directions on the braided cord that held the covering.

With the cuts now imminent, the administration continued its campaign Wednesday to cast them in dire terms. Education Secretary Arne Duncan appeared in the White House briefing room to detail what he described as bad choices in reducing assistance to schools and early childhood programs.

"The only choice I can make would be to hurt fewer poor children and help more special needs kids, or do the opposite," Duncan said. "It's a no-win proposition."

He said the first to feel the pinch will be school districts in and around military bases and Native American reservations, entities which receive direct federal aid to make up for lower local property taxes.

Duncan's remarks came a day after the Department of Homeland Security announced that the forced cuts had prompted the federal immigration enforcement agency to start releasing illegal immigrants being held in immigrant jails across the country.

Carney on Wednesday said the decision was made by career immigration and customs enforcement officials, without input from the White House.

Friday's meeting reflects a move to jumpstart negotiations after weeks of inaction on cuts that both parties have said could inflict major damage to government programs, the military and the economy at large. No serious talks to avert the cuts have been under way, and Friday's meeting will be the first face-to-face discussion between Obama and Republican leaders this year.

Republicans were considering offering a measure that would give Obama authority to propose a rewrite to the 2013 budget to redistribute the cuts. Obama would be unable to cut defense by more than the $43 billion reduction that the Pentagon currently faces, and would also be unable to raise taxes to undo the cuts. The GOP plan would allow the Obama proposal to go into effect unless Congress passed a resolution to overturn them.

The idea is that money could be transferred from lower-priority accounts to accounts funding air traffic control or meat inspection. But the White House says that such moves would only offer slight relief. At the same time, however, it could take pressure off of Congress to address the sequester.

In the House, where Republicans in the last Congress passed legislation to replace the cuts, Boehner has said it's now up to Obama and the Senate to figure a way out. The Senate never took up the House-passed bills, which expired when the new Congress was seated in January.

Police in the UK have ordered Google, Twitter and Facebook to remove photographs claiming to show the recently released murderer of James Bulger, who was killed in Liverpool 20 years ago. In addition to the injunction that bans the photos, authorities threatened Monday to take legal action -- in the form of fines or even jail time -- against individuals posting photos of the murderer.

Pensacola prides itself in its foot races, with the hosting of the Double Bridge Run, McGuire?s St. Patrick?s Day 5K, the recent Jubilee Run, Walk or Drag with Color and several others.

The University of West Florida holds two races every year: the Ghost Chase 5K in the fall semester and the Bunny Dash 5K in spring.

Runners will head to the Multipurpose Fields for the Bunny Dash 5K on the morning of March 30. They will be trekking through 3.1 miles of the cross country trails at the Edward Ball Nature Trail.

Light refreshments will be provided. Bunny costumes are encouraged.

?For Halloween, people dress up way more, of course,? said Jennifer Hernandez, the supervisor for Fitness and Wellness at the Health, Leisure and Sports Facility. ?For Bunny Dash, people wear bunny ears or they paint their faces.?

The Bunny Dash 5K is open to the public. Registration can be completed online at www.uwf.edu/recreation/FitnessWellness/bunnydash1.cfm or in person at the front desk downstairs in the HLS Facility. Students can register at no cost for the race with a valid Nautilus card. Faculty, staff and community members will be charged a $15 registration fee until March 23, but after March 23, the fee will increase to $20.

The race is limited to 150 runners. Hernandez said that more runners come from the community than the university.

?It?s a mix, but there are actually more community members, a lot of older alumni,? Hernandez said. ?They bring their kids or grandchildren. Out of 150, there?s probably 70 that are actual students.?

James Barnett, a sophomore pre-professional biology major, will participate again this year.

?When a lot of people show up to races, it makes it enjoyable,? Barnett said in an email interview. ?5K races are something I always look forward to because it gives me a chance to meet new people who share the love for running.?

Barnett placed first with a time of 19 minutes and 16 seconds in the men?s division last spring.

The race will begin at 9:00 a.m. and is hosted by Recreation and Sports Services at the university. For more information about the Bunny Dash 5K, contact Beth Godwin at erg1@students.uwf.edu.

Chimps 'solve puzzles for fun'

Chimpanzees enjoy trying to solve brainteasers, according to research done at Bedfordshire's Whipsnade Zoo.

Scientists set up a game for six chimps that involved moving red dice through pipes until they fell into a container.

The same task was also carried out using brazil nuts instead of dice, so that success led to a treat.

However, the Zoological Society of London found the apes enjoyed getting stuck into a puzzle, with or without the opportunity to win a prize.

The chimpanzees, all members of an adult family group at the zoo, had to prod sticks into holes in the pipes to change the direction of the dice and get them to fall in the right place.

They did not receive advance training on how to play the game and the scientists said the apes were given complete freedom whether or not to pit their wits in the puzzle.

'Feel-good reward'

Researcher Fay Clark, from the society, said they noticed the chimps were "keen to complete the puzzle" for its own sake, regardless of whether or not they received a food reward.

"This strongly suggests they get similar feelings of satisfaction to humans who often complete brain-games for a feel-good reward," she said.

"For chimps in the wild, this task is a little bit like foraging for insects or honey inside a tree stump or a termite mound, except more challenging because the dice do not stick to the tool."

Researchers created higher "levels" of challenge by connecting many pipes together, and making them opaque so the dice or nuts could only be glimpsed through small holes.

The findings are published in the March edition of the American Journal of Primatology.

Samsung HomeSync Android TV box hands-on (video)

DNP Samsung HomeSync Android TV box handson video

Yesterday, Samsung announced the HomeSync Android TV box, and as expected that device is making an appearance here on the MWC 2013 show floor. Boxy media hubs can only be so attractive, but the HomeSync's grey-and-black aesthetic is sleek, and the brushed-metal finish will look familiar to anyone who's used a Sammy handset or laptop. There's a pair of USB 3.0 inputs, an HDMI port, optical audio and Ethernet connections on the rear, and buttons for power and settings on the front, but you can easily hide the console deep inside your home theater rig -- it can be controlled exclusively with a Android 4.2-equipped smartphone or tablet.

The Jelly Bean-powered HomeSync runs a 1.7GHz dual-core processor with 1TB of storage, and it supports up to eight accounts for uploading, downloading and sharing content between devices. Those with a Galaxy device will be able to wirelessly stream content to their TVs in full 1080p, and Play Store access is on board for downloading additional media. It worked well during our hands-on, but as with any WiFi-equipped streaming device, there was noticeable lag when mirroring the smartphone display on the connected HDTV. Still, assuming the price is right, we can see this being a solid component within any home theater setup. Take a closer look in our hands-on video after the break.

Sony Xperia Tablet Z launching globally: 6.9mm thin, quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro and 1,920 x 1,200 display

Sony Xperia Tablet Z announced

Sony's newest tablet, known as the Xperia Tablet Z, launched in Japan last month, but it still hasn't been seen outside of the Far East. Mobile World Congress is the perfect venue to show it off to the entire world, it seems, as it's now expanding to other parts of the globe. As we had hoped, the super-thin Tablet Z doesn't wander off from Japan's variant spec-wise, though this model will offer your choice of 16 or 32GB internal storage, rather than simply the latter. (Sony also announced that a WiFi-only version with 64GB space will come to the US.) Otherwise, it still boasts Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean, a quad-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro CPU, 2GB RAM, a 6,000mAh battery, 8.1MP rear camera and 2MP front-facing cam, NFC, PlayStation Certified, four speakers and a 1,920 x 1,200 display.

Also, the MWC launch gives us a peek at a few minor details we didn't get in the first go-round: the slate includes MHL, up to 64GB of microSD expansion and DLNA, but oddly we haven't seen any specifics on battery size. And just like its cousin, the Z will come with Jelly Bean installed but Sony promises that 4.2 is on its way, though no ETA was given for the update. Finally, we won't hold back on the pricing and availability, even if we kept you in suspense until the end: the black model will be sold in Sony stores and authorized sellers this May, and the white model (which only comes in a 32GB flavor) will be exclusive to official company outlets. A 16GB will put you back $499 and 32GB will be $599. If you're up for a deeper look into the tablet, our hands-on is a great place to get started.

Dr. Michael J. Breus: Sleep: The Key to a Long-Term, Loving Relationship?

It is one of the most common struggles that couples face: Over the life of a relationship, partners can lose a sense of appreciation for one another. Holding onto a sense of gratitude for each other is one of the hallmarks of couples who stay content in their relationships over the course of many years. On the other hand, loss of gratitude and appreciation between partners can jeopardize a relationship's long-term success.

A new study suggests that poor sleep may contribute to a lack of appreciation between romantic partners. Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley conducted a multi-part study to examine how sleep may affect people's feelings of gratitude and the ability to value and appreciate romantic partners. The study was presented recently at the annual conference of the Society for Personality and Social Psychology. The study included more than 60 heterosexual couples between the ages 18-56. They participated in three separate exercises designed to measure how sleep affects individual levels of gratitude and sense of appreciation between partners:

  • After a night of sleep, people were asked to make a list of five things for which they were grateful. Those with poor sleep demonstrated less of a sense of appreciation than those with better sleep quality and sleep quantity.
  • Participants were asked to keep a daily record for two weeks of both their sleep and their feelings of gratitude -- and lack thereof. Researchers identified a decline in levels of gratitude that was associated with poor sleep. People were more likely to report feelings of selfishness after a night of sleeping poorly.
  • The third section of the study looked specifically at how sleep affects the dynamic of gratitude and appreciation between couples. Their results showed that people tended to feel less appreciated by their partners if either they or their partner slept poorly.

The last finding is particularly interesting: A lack of sleep by one person in the relationship resulted in greater likelihood of diminished feelings of appreciation by both partners. This suggests just how deeply sleep can influence the emotional dynamic of a relationship.

Sleep can pose a number of challenges to relationships. Poor sleep can make for difficult sleeping conditions for couples. The tossing and turning of insomnia and the noisy, disrupted sleep of snoring and sleep apnea don't just diminish the quality of sleep for the individuals with the disorder. They also rob partners of restful sleep. Night owls and larks who share a bed may also have difficulty marrying their sleep schedules. If you're an early-to-bed, early-to-rise type, having a partner who likes to read or watch television late into the night can interfere with sleep.

These may be among the reasons why an increasing number of couples are choosing to sleep in separate beds. Research shows as many as 25 percent of couples are sleeping separately, and this is a number that's been rising for years. The separate-bed strategy may seem like an attractive option for couples struggling to sleep together well. But it's important to consider what might be lost in this choice. I'm talking about the intimacy created by sharing a bed. And I'm not only talking about sexual intimacy, although that's certainly a risk of sharing separate beds. (At the very least, couples are much less likely to have spontaneous sex if they're not sleeping together.) I'm also talking about the sense of togetherness and emotional connection that comes from sleeping together.

What's more, sleeping together can actually reinforce good sleep habits. Partners who sleep together can be a positive influence when it comes to keeping reasonable bedtimes and not falling asleep to the television. Studies have shown that sleep apnea patients who use CPAP therapy are 60 percent more likely to stick with the treatment if their partners continue to share a bed, rather than sleeping separately.

This latest research makes sense given what we know about how sleep affects mood and outlook, as well as emotional and mental health. Poor quality sleep and insufficient sleep can negatively affect mood and judgment, making us cranky and less apt to greet the inevitable ups and downs of life with perspective and an even keel. Research shows that poor sleep increases the likelihood of depression and anxiety, conditions that themselves can interfere with sleep. So it's not surprising that gratitude might diminish when we're short on sleep, and that the people closest to us -- our partners -- might bear the brunt of this diminished sense of appreciation.

I'd like to see more studies like this, both for the specific knowledge and insights they provide us about the functions of sleep, but also for the way they highlight the very central role that sleep plays in the quality of our waking lives and the lives of those we love.

State may brand illegal immigrants' driver's licenses

North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles via WCNC

The new North Carolina license declares to everyone that the bearer has "no lawful status."

By The Associated Press

RALEIGH, N.C. ? A new North Carolina driver's license set to be issued to some illegal immigrants has a bright pink stripe and the bold words "NO LAWFUL STATUS," raising concerns about whether the design will brand those who show it.

The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles announced last week that it would begin issuing the licenses March 25 following a lengthy legal review. The Obama administration's Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program grants valid federal work permits to qualified applicants brought to the U.S. as children without legal authorization.

Some Republican lawmakers in the state have balked at the idea, filing a bill Thursday to bar the DMV from granting the licenses until at least June.

Cinthia Marroquin, 22, of Raleigh, ?head organizer for NC DREAM Team, an immigrant rights group, is?awaiting approval for a DACA permit. She said the longer the license issue is delayed, the longer it will take for her to get a job and drive herself to work. Even if she is able to get one, she is worried about presenting a license declaring she has "NO LAWFUL STATUS" at a police roadblock or while writing a check at the grocery store.

"A lot of us are just scared," said Marroquin, who came to the U.S. from Mexico when she was 15. "We just want to be able to get a job and drive to work. Having that license is just going to show everybody you're here illegally, just buying a beer or writing a check. You don't know how people might react."

The American Civil Liberties Union of North Carolina also takes issue with the designation.

"North Carolina should not be making it harder for aspiring citizens to integrate and contribute to our communities by branding them with a second-class driver's license," said ACLU attorney Raul Pinto. "There is simply no reason for officials to stigmatize people who are in the U.S. legally with an unnecessary marker that could lead to harassment, confusion, and racial profiling."

Almost from the moment President Barack Obama announced the program in June, states across the country grappled with how and whether to issue driver's licenses to those granted legal presence.

Watch US News videos on NBCNews.com

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has said it is up to officials in each state to make their own determination about what to do. Many states, including Oregon and Georgia, have announced that they will grant driving privileges to those eligible.

In Arizona, where Republican Gov. Jan Brewer has pledged that DACA youths will not get driver's licenses, the state's DMV still lists federal work permits among the documents making people eligible for one.

The issue is especially politically charged in North Carolina, where current state law ordains a driver's license will be issued to anyone who holds valid federal documentation of their "legal presence" in the United States.

The office of the state's Democratic attorney general in an opinion last month said that under federal law, DACA participants have a "legal presence," even if they do not have "lawful status." Therefore, state law requires that DACA participants be granted licenses. Republican Gov. Pat McCrory's administration agreed, announcing last week the DMV would begin issuing the licenses.

That has upset many conservatives in McCrory's own party, including Rep. Mark Brody, R-Union. He is one of four freshmen legislators who introduced a bill Thursday to bar the DMV from issuing licenses to DACA participants before June 15, potentially giving time to craft a permanent change to state law.

Brody said he believes strongly that the DACA program violated the U.S. Constitution because it was implemented without congressional approval. Obama said last year he was forced to take executive action by the decades-long failure of Congress to consider meaningful immigration reform.

"We need a time out," said Brody, a construction contractor. "We don't need to have the federal government dictating to us how we are supposed to issue licenses in this state. We do it, and that's a privilege we have under our Constitution."

Among the concerns raised by Brody and other bill sponsors is that illegal immigrants might use their new licenses to access social programs or register to vote, despite the bright pink markings. An extensive 2011 review of the state's 6.4 million registered voters by the N.C. Board of Elections found 12 instances where a non-citizen successfully cast a ballot.

Jose Rico, a 23-year-old Raleigh resident from Mexico who has already been issued DACA work permit, said he plans to be in line at the DMV on March 25 to get a license, even if it's pink. He will be extremely disappointed if state legislators pass a bill delaying or a denying his ability to do so.

"I don't know what's wrong with these people, why they're so afraid of people like me," said Rico, who has lived in the U.S. since he was 13. "It's so frustrating. I passed a federal background check, done everything right by the book. I'm paying taxes. I mean, we're just kids trying to go to school."

Associated Press writer Gosia Wozniacka contributed from Fresno, Calif.

Insert Coin semifinalist Hodu is a 'zero failure' physical therapy hardware software combo

Hodu borrows its name from the Korean word for "walnut," a reference to the culture's use of the nut as an exercise tool in traditional medicine. The barbell-shaped device is a "zero failure" physical therapy tool, aimed at rewarding patients for even the slightest level of feedback. There are on-board pressure sensors and accelerometers for detecting activity and a series of colored LEDs that light up based on feedback levels. Chicago bluesman Magic Slim dead at 75

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Guitarist Magic Slim, a mainstay of the Chicago blues scene who followed in the footsteps of such greats as Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf, died on Thursday at age 75, his manager said.

Slim, the son of Mississippi sharecroppers, gave up the piano and turned to guitar after losing his right pinky finger in a cotton gin accident at age 13. He died at a Philadelphia hospital where he had been under treatment for various ailments, manager Marty Salzman said.

A heavy smoker who suffered from emphysema and heart problems, Slim was forced by illness to cut short a tour with his band, the Teardrops, in late January, Salzman said.

Born Morris Holt in Torrence, Mississippi, Slim grew up on a farm and made his first trip to Chicago in 1955, starting off as the bass player for a friend and mentor known as Magic Sam, who lent the younger musician his nickname.

Slim cut his first record in 1966 and became a Chicago blues fixture in his own right, developing a guitar style that blended a distinct vibrato with a slide-guitar-like sound formed with his bare fingers against the strings.

Known for playing with picks on both the thumb and index finger of his right hand - a somewhat unusual technique, according to Salzman - the guitarist was recognized as much for his powerful, gruff vocals as his musicianship.

With more than 30 albums to his credit, Slim also was known for an encyclopedic mastery of the blues, Salzman said.

"There's probably not another bluesman who had quite the repertoire that Slim had," he said.

While Slim lived in recent years with his family in Nebraska, "Chicago was always like home to him," his manager said.

Then the company pivoted a bit last September, announcing a new Checkout app that would allow users to purchase regular household items and have them shipped to their homes with just one click. PayDragon is making its Checkout functionality even easier with the latest relaunch of its app, which makes products searchable by category, as well as the most popular items and daily and weekly deals. The app still has individual item pages, which provides users with one-click purchasing. But whereas previous versions of the app were dependent on scanning QR and UPC bar codes or search to add items, the new version simplifies the process. By redesigning the app around different popular product categories, users can more easily find the stuff that they want, even if they don’t have an object to scan or forget the name of the product. And it also has a few sections for deals, where customers can purchase discounted products. As was the case in earlier versions of its app, there’s no shopping cart or payment confirmation page — once a customer has entered billing and shipping information, items they choose will be automatically billed for and shipped once the purchase button is hit. In addition to the new design, PayDragon has also improved its service on the back end. The company is now working with a fulfillment company to handle assembling items and shipping them to customers. While each purchase is billed individually, many users will purchase many items at once, or at least during the same day. PayDragon’s fulfillment center works to bundle items and ship them together. It also means that PayDragon gets better margins for its service. PayDragon has raised $1.35 million in seed funding from Rustic Canyon Partners, SV Angel, Yuri Milner, and Mark Schwartz.

Job seekers ask: Where has all the courtesy gone?

Many jobseekers report never hearing back after applying for a job.

By Allison Linn, TODAY

Maybe you weren?t expecting to?land the job. But if you?ve been applying for jobs recently, chances are you hoped to?hear something back.

And chances are, you?ve been disappointed at least once.

A new survey finds that 75 percent of employed people who applied for a job in the past year never heard from at least one potential employer.

The results were part of a broad survey of more than 3,900 workers conducted last November by Harris Interactive for jobs website CareerBuilder. Of the 1,083 workers who said they had applied for a job in the past year, more than 800 reported never hearing a peep at least once.

Miss Manners might not approve, but experts say it?s not unusual these days for jobseekers to find their job applications ignored. Blame a combination of the still-tough job market, which can mean that hundreds or thousands of people are applying for the same positions, and technology that makes it all too easy for people to apply for dozens if not hundreds of jobs.

?It is pretty common, unfortunately,? said Lynn Taylor, a workplace expert and author of ?Tame Your Terrible Office Tyrant,? who was not involved in the CareerBuilder survey.

The CareerBuilder survey found that overall, about one fourth of the full pool of 3,900 workers had had a bad experience as a job applicant. Those experiences included never hearing the decision after a job interview, finding out the actual job didn?t match the original description and having a job application ignored, according to?CareerBuilder.

Not surprisingly, more than 4 in 10 workers said that if they were treated badly they wouldn?t seek employment with that company again.

Taylor, the workplace expert, said ignoring resumes or not following up after an interview could harm a company?s reputation. But in the current job market, with unemployment still hovering around 8 percent, she said most employers probably figure they can get away with it because so many people are desperate for work.

With hiring so tight, she noted, companies also may not have the manpower to follow up with each applicant.

?Yes, it?s the right thing to, but .. the reality is that it?s not going to happen as much as it used to,? she said. ?That?s the harsh reality of today.?

Instead of sulking about not hearing back, Taylor said that jobseekers who really want the job need to be proactive about following up with the hiring manager themselves.

That can be true later in the hiring process as well, she said.

If you make it to the interview stage, Taylor recommends asking during the interview what the time frame is for filling the position and what the next steps are. You could even consider asking how you stack up against other applicants, she said.

After sending your thank-you note, she said it?s also appropriate to follow-up again in a week or so, to check on where things stand and perhaps to offer another tidbit of information about yourself.

Still, she noted that it?s a fine line between following up and harassing. If you check in three times and never hear back, it?s probably best to stop pestering them ? and wonder if you really want to work for a company like that in the first place.

Do you think employers should follow up with every person who applies for a job?

NBA trade deadline features only minor moves

Dallas Mavericks' Shawn Marion, left, and Elton Brand (42) defend as Orlando Magic's J.J. Redick makes a pass beneath the basket during the first half of a game Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2013, in Dallas. Redick was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks on Thursday.

NEW YORK ? The only trade involving Dwight Howard came last summer. The potent scorers that moved did so long ago.

There was no eye-catching activity left for deadline day, resulting in minor deals Thursday to the disappointment of those hoping for a frenzy.

Josh Smith stayed put and the Boston Celtics? core stayed together, leaving J.J. Redick, dealt to Milwaukee, as the biggest name to be traded.

There were nine moves, nothing approaching a blockbuster and none to jump-start the Lakers.

Players such as James Harden and Rudy Gay were traded far before the deadline, but with teams perhaps fearful of new penalties for the biggest spenders, Thursday was mostly quiet.

?I don?t think I?ve seen fewer trade deadline deals, ever,? said Houston general manager Daryl Morey, who completed two trades Wednesday. ?But I think it?s a one-year blip.?

The Atlanta Hawks held onto Smith, and Utah kept both Paul Millsap and Al Jefferson on a day when much attention was focused on both situations, since those players have value and could leave their teams this summer as free agents.

The long-shot deals never materialized. Howard remained in Los Angeles, just what Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak repeatedly said would happen. Howard?s unhappiness and struggles since he was acquired from Orlando last summer fueled speculation that the Lakers might move him before possibly losing him for nothing as a free agent.

?It took a while for league to understand our position was exactly what we stated,? Kupchak told reporters. ?I think they finally got it.?

Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce will continue wearing Celtic green, as will Rajon Rondo when he?s healthy enough to put on a uniform again.

The Celtics did make one deal, acquiring guard Jordan Crawford from the Washington Wizards for center Jason Collins and injured guard Leandro Barbosa.

Those were the types of trades that were left after the big names that were available had already been moved. Oklahoma City sent All-Star Harden to Houston the preseason, fearing it couldn?t pay what last season?s top sixth man would want after already giving lucrative long-term deals to Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook.

The Memphis Grizzlies broke up their frontcourt when they sent Gay to Toronto in a three-team deal with Detroit ?I think normally a point was made, normally you would see big deals being made. We cannot forget, Andre Iguodala, that deal was made in the summer. That could have potentially been a trade deadline move,? said Denver Nuggets president Masai Ujiri, referring to the player he acquired in the four-time Howard trade in August.

?Harden was traded right before the season started. That could have been a potential trade deadline move. Rudy Gay was started a couple weeks ago. There was some cleanup before this date. Apart from a couple guys who were out there all the time in terms of big names, it just went by. I can?t explain it.?

Finances certainly played into it. The collective bargaining agreement that went into effect in 2011 came with much more punitive penalties for teams that repeatedly exceed the luxury tax and limits the options of those over the salary cap, and decisions Thursday were made with that in mind.

Golden State sent forward Jeremy Tyler to Atlanta and guard Charles Jenkins to Philadelphia in separate deals, slicing more than $1.5 million off its payroll after beginning the day about $1.2 million over the league?s $70,307,000 luxury tax.

Rebuilding after trading Howard, the Magic decided Redick wasn?t in their plans while averaging career highs in points (15.1) and field goal percentage (45.0). He was traded along with center Gustavo Ayon and reserve point guard Ish Smith to the Bucks in exchange for guards Doron Lamb and Beno Udrih, and forward Tobias Harris.

The New York Knicks traded Ronnie Brewer to Oklahoma City to open a roster spot that will be used to give Kenyon Martin a 10-day contract. The Hawks couldn?t find a good enough deal for Smith, who had largely been considered the biggest name that would move, and settled for sending Anthony Morrow to Dallas for Dahntay Jones.

With so little happening, Morey may have pulled off the most intriguing move this week when he acquired Thomas Robinson, the No. 5 pick in last year?s draft, from Sacramento in one of his two deals.

?I thought the main thing that was different at this trade deadline was there was a big premium on cap space and draft picks,? Morey said. ?Usually, that?s the currency that moves markets. They were at such a premium that every deal was very difficult. It became like a barter economy instead of a cash economy. That made deals harder.

?I do think you could say that maybe the CBA might be contributing to that. But I also think a lot of it is just the phase teams are in. There are a lot of good teams trying to maybe rebuild, for lack of a better word.
