The UK?s transition to a high-speed internet is continuing apace as BT connect a further 1.2 million homes and businesses to the expanding fibre network.
BT will be updating 99 more exchanges over the coming year, which will take the total number of connected premises in the UK to over 19 million ? which will cover most of the country. Although it?s mainly urban areas which will benefit. Unfortunately for those in rural areas, the current network ?topography? and the cost involved in reaching more isolated areas will make it unlikely that many rural villages make it onto the fibre network grid.
However, BT?s leadership is upbeat about the progress being made, and hasn?t ruled out the addition of further exchanges to the network before spring of next year:
?The UK is making great progress with superfast broadband and this latest phase of work will keep up the momentum.?I am sure that communities across the UK will be pleased to see that they are factored into our commercial plans and I now look forward to working with councils to identify further areas that we can enable with their support.?
Mike Galvin ? Managing Director, BT Openreach
