BlackBerry Q10 coming to Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile this summer

We've gotten word of a new BlackBerry smartphone today, and we now also have some news about familiar one. Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile have all confirmed that they'll soon be carrying the BlackBerry Q10, although some are being more specific with details than others. Verizon is saying that it will be available sometime in June (it has an exclusive on the white version), while Sprint will only go as far as to say "late summer," with neither offering a price. T-Mobile will also be rolling out the phone sometime in June, and has confirmed that it will cost $99.99 down with its new plan structure, or $579.99 if you want to buy it outright. All this follows business registation for the device, which began last month. We've yet to hear anything more from AT&T, but it has already committed to the device and will presumably be launching it in roughly the same timeframe as well.

Angelina Jolie: I have had double mastectomy

In a surprising revelation, the actress wrote in the New York Times that she underwent a double mastectomy after learning she had a high likelihood of being diagnosed with breast cancer. NBC's Dr. Nancy Snyderman reports.

By Gil Aegerter and Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, Staff Writers, NBC News

Angelina Jolie says she has undergone a preventive double mastectomy after being told that she had an 87 percent risk of breast cancer, along with a 50 percent risk of ovarian cancer.

In an article published in the opinion section of Tuesday's New York Times, Jolie said her decision was informed by her mother's long fight against cancer. Marcheline Bertrand died in 2007 at age 56.

Jolie said she hoped that other women would find encouragement from her story.?

"I choose not to keep my story private because there are many women who do not know that they might be living under the shadow of cancer," Jolie said in the Times article. "It is my hope that they, too, will be able to get gene tested, and that if they have a high risk they, too, will know that they have strong options."?

Jolie, an actress and activist, said she carries a gene, BRCA1, that increases the risk of breast and ovarian cancer. According to Jolie and a fact sheet from the Cancer Institute at Stanford Medicine, women with the BRCA1 gene have an average of a 65 percent lifetime risk for breast cancer, along with heightened risk of the cancer at an early age. Jolie is 37.?

Jolie said three months of medical procedures that the mastectomies involved were completed April 27. She said the surgery included implants to reconstruct her breasts.

She said that her partner, Brad Pitt, was present for the surgeries. She said her six children, who range in age from 11 to 4, saw nothing that made them uncomfortable.

"They can see my small scars and that?s it," Jolie wrote. "Everything else is just Mommy, the same as she always was.?And they know that I love them and will do anything to be with them as long as I can."

Other famous women with the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes have undergone preventive double mastectomies, including reality star Sharon Osbourne, wife of rocker Ozzy.

"I've had cancer before and I didn't want to live under that cloud," Osborne said in an interview last fall.

In January, Miss America contestant Allyn Rose, representing the District of Columbia, announced that she carries another genetic mutation -- not BRCA1 or BRCA2 -- and plans to have a double mastectomy after her year of serving as Miss D.C.

Friends and fans were quick to support Jolie via messages on Twitter. Actress Marlee Matlin called her "brave, honest (and) strong." And "Veronica Mars" star?Kristen Bell praised Jolie's article as "admirable."

Description

The PCRP Idea Development Award mechanism was first offered in FY97. Since then, 5,748 Idea Development Award applications have been received, and 1,029 have been recommended for funding. The Idea Development Award supports new ideas that represent innovative approaches to prostate cancer research and have the potential to make an important contribution to the PCRP mission. Although groundbreaking research often involves a degree of risk, applications should be based on a sound scientific rationale that is established through logical reasoning and/or critical review and analysis of the literature. Due to this award?s emphasis on innovation, the presentation of preliminary data relevant to prostate cancer and the proposed project is encouraged but not required. Research deemed innovative may represent a new paradigm, challenge current paradigms, look at existing problems from new perspectives, or exhibit other highly creative qualities. Research that is an incremental advance upon published data is not considered innovative. The PCRP seeks applications from the wide spectrum of basic, population-based, translational, and clinical research. In addition, applicants are expected to address at least one of the PCRP focus areas and are highly encouraged to address one of the PCRP overarching challenges. If the proposed project does not address any of the overarching challenges, the application should include a description to justify how the project will nevertheless address a critical need in the field of prostate cancer research and/or patient care. New Investigator Option: The FY13 Idea Development Award mechanism encourages applications from investigators in the early stages of their careers. The New Investigator Option is designed to allow applicants early in their faculty appointments, or in the process of developing independent research careers, to compete for funding separately from established investigators. Applications from New Investigators and Established Investigators will be peer- and programmatically reviewed in separate groups. PIs using the New Investigator Option are strongly encouraged to strengthen their applications through collaboration with investigators experienced in prostate cancer research and/or possessing other relevant expertise. It is the responsibility of the PI to describe how collaboration will augment his or her expertise to best address the research question. All applicants for the New Investigator Option must meet specific eligibility criteria as described in Section I.C., Eligibility Information.

War spawns new approaches for wounded service members' pain care

May 11, 2013 ? Better body armor and rapid aeromedical evacuations enable American service members to survive blasts that would have proved fatal in Vietnam or even the first Gulf War, but they pose new challenges to military medicine -- how to deal with the excruciating pain of injuries, especially severe burns from IED blasts that body armor can't protect.

In fact, U.S. military doctors say the wars are inflicting injuries among the most painful known to medicine. Department of Defense scientists working at the U.S Army Institute of Surgical Research (USAISR) at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston, Texas, spoke at the American Pain Society's annual scientific meeting and reported on progress in addressing pain management challenges for treating service members returning from the war front with severe burns.

"Soldiers with severe burns, such as those on 20 percent of their bodies or more, are often hospitalized for months and they endure agonizing pain every day -- not just from the first wound but also from repeated washings, dressing changes and multiple skin graft surgeries," said DOD Scientist Marcie Fowler, Ph.D. "Many also have polytraumatic injuries and have received several levels of treatment from the battlefield to the hospital, and brain trauma adds a cognitive impairment component to the rehabilitation of burns and polytraumatic injuries."

Opioids have been a mainstay for treating pain in badly burned warfighters, but extended use increases the risk for respiratory side effects and possible addiction. "There aren't many great alternatives to opioids but they do work and we have to deal with the side effects," said Fowler. "However, we are exploring several alternatives that might help reduce opioid use."

Dayna Loyd Averitt, Ph.D., a researcher at the USAISR, reported that the Army is conducting extensive research with novel therapeutic options for treating pain, such as using complementary drug therapy regimens, multidisciplinary pain

management strategies, and even virtual reality to help decrease pain during procedures. She reviewed current projects evaluating the potential benefits of the synthetic analgesic tramadol to treat pain with a reduced emphasis on opioids and in using an injectable agent, resiniferatoxin (RTX), to temporarily deactivate nerve endings. The RTX project is in collaboration with the National Institutes of Health.

"In our research with tramadol, we are evaluating the potential of using dual mechanism therapeutics that act on both opiate and neurotransmitter receptors," explained Averitt. "The drug's activity with neurotransmitters involved in pain modulation, such as serotonin and norepinephrine, could be helpful in treating pain while decreasing opioid use and lowering risk for addiction. The anti-depressive mode of action also can help treat burn patients who are dealing with PTSD and mood disorders.

Averitt said that preclinical studies with RTX show that treatment significantly reduced pain sensitivity from burns.

Astronauts Fix Phantom Space Station Ammonia Leak

In the end it is a matter of what you want to do with the spacecraft. Unmanned spacecraft are cheap and reliable. Manned craft are a little more flexible, but expensive and unreliable.

Unmanned spacecraft are cheap and reliable? Not really. We've had plenty of accidents. Keep in mind that up to the year 2000, the US, Soviet Union, and Japan had launched 43 probes to Mars and 13 were successful. That's a 30% success rate. Not all that hot.

In 2012 dollars, we've spent 12.5 billion--with a B--dollars on Mars exploration. And we've learned a lot. Now, we'll say that a manned mission costs 1000x that, or 12.5 trillion--with a T. The interesting question is, would we learn 1000x more ab

Mrs. Obama: Seek out those with different beliefs

RICHMOND, Ky. (AP) ? First lady Michelle Obama urged Eastern Kentucky University graduates on Saturday night to reach out to people with different political beliefs, saying the country would benefit from the conversations.

"If you're a Democrat, spend some time talking to a Republican," Mrs. Obama told about 600 education, business and technology graduates at the third and final commencement ceremony of the day. "And if you're a Republican, have a chat with a Democrat. Maybe you'll find some common ground, maybe you won't."

The first lady suggested that they visit senior centers to benefit from the experiences of people with plenty of "life experience under their belts." She also pointed them to religious congregations different than their own, saying they might hear something in a sermon "that stays with you." And she predicted they would learn something if they reached out "with an open mind and an open heart."

"And goodness knows, we need more of that," she said. "Because we know what happens when we only talk to people who think like we do. We just get stuck in our ways."

The first lady received thunderous applause from several thousand people attending the ceremony in a state that voted overwhelmingly against her husband, President Barack Obama, in his two successful runs for the White House.

She exhorted the graduates to apply the same resilience and work ethic they showed in school to their lives beyond campus to cope with life's ups-and-downs.

"How are you going to respond when you don't get that job you had your heart set on?" she said.

To the soon-to-be teachers in the crowd, she urged fortitude when their students don't respond to their lessons ? and urged the same fortitude for the business students when their bosses pile work on them.

Those are the times that will "force you to claw and scratch and fight" to endure, she said.

The White House said the first lady was drawn to EKU as part of her initiative to support veterans and military families. EKU has gained national recognition for its efforts to help veterans advance their education, including its Veterans Success Center, which provides one-stop-assistance for advising, counseling and job placement services.

A campus group took potshots at Obama administration policies ahead of Mrs. Obama's visit, handing out fliers bemoaning the challenging job prospects for the new graduates.

"Good luck landing your first job," said the flier from the EKU chapter of Young Americans for Liberty. "Only 47 percent of you will be able to find a job in your preferred field, so I hope you're still on good terms with your parents."

Opinion: Canadians deserve fair tendering processes across Canada

?

Edmonton?s proposed downtown hockey arena project will use steel from a Quebec company, angering local suppliers.

Photograph by: Canadian Press

When Quebec firm Structal-Heavy Steel Construction was selected to supply steel to Edmonton?s proposed downtown hockey arena project by Alberta construction giant PCL, there were more than a few raised eyebrows in and around Edmonton.

Local steel construction and fabrication firms (Waiward Steel and Supreme Group) submitted a joint bid that was $5 million to $6 million higher than Structal?s and didn?t win the job. Structal?s winning bid was reportedly in the $50-million to $60-million range.

Edmonton companies were quick to criticize the awarding of the contract to a Quebec firm, pointing out their long-standing support for local communities. Making matters worse for the local outfits is the slowdown in Alberta?s oilsands construction, which has hit local steel fabricators hard.

Waiward and Supreme?s concerns are understandable ? in part because of the controversial nature of the downtown arena project. As it stands, Edmonton taxpayers are footing the bill for a large part of the arena. Isn?t it only fair that if a project is paid for with public dollars, local firms should be awarded the business?

Not necessarily.

What?s really important is whether the decision is fair to the taxpayers and other investors ? including Darryl Katz and Rexall Group ? who are footing the bill for the project. Favouring local firms is a slippery slope toward inefficient protectionism.

Canadians deserve transparent and fair tendering processes across Canada ? processes that don?t discriminate based on location, but on price and quality of service.

And here is the problem highlighted by the arena project ? we don?t have fair processes across Canada. It?s frustrating that PCL did the right thing on the arena project by awarding the contract to the most competitive firm, but Alberta companies can?t always expect the same treatment in other provinces.

Take Quebec, for example. Should the rumoured Quebec City NHL-ready arena proceed, can Edmonton companies Waiward and Supreme expect a fair shot at winning the steel fabrication business in that province? We?re not so sure. Quebec municipalities often have preferential policies in place that benefit local firms over companies from other provinces.

It?s not just Quebec. Governments across Canada give an advantage to local firms in a variety of ways. In fact, Canada is blanketed by a patchwork quilt of subsidies and restrictions aimed at preventing Canadians from doing business with one another in order to appease some local concern or another. Nobody wins under these rules in the long run, and everyone loses by paying higher prices for public services.

It?s also costing us our international competitiveness, as Perrin Beatty, Canadian Chamber of Commerce president and CEO, told the Globe and Mail recently. Liquor monopolies, provincial securities regulators, shipping rules, licensing and accreditation rules and food-supply management boards all serve to ?balkanize? the Canadian economy and hinder our ability to both attract investment from around the world and sell our wares globally.

There has always been a push to reduce these trade barriers in Canada and there have been some wins. The New West Partnership Agreement between Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia harmonized hundreds of regulations among those three provinces. Quebec and Ontario have a trade agreement in place (although not as meaningful as the new west partnership.)

While there is some support for freer internal trade in Canada, the comfortable status quo often carries the day. After all, a firm that is the beneficiary of a distortionary government regulation probably won?t go quietly into the night after that crutch is snatched away in the interest of national economic growth.

Rather than resort to more protectionism or expensive preferential local procurement policies, situations like the Edmonton arena should serve to inspire us to tear down inefficient trade barriers. Instead of retreating into silos or throwing up more road blocks, Canadians should demand a single common market. It?s time for business leaders to reach out across borders and find allies in the cause of freer trade, and make sure governments know the status quo is no longer an option.

We welcome the participation and full partnership of Quebec companies in Alberta. Structal Steel, a subsidiary of Groupe Canam, is just the latest in a long list of Quebec companies operating successfully here. We need more of this kind of inter-jurisdictional cooperation and investment and we should work together to ensure a level playing field for business across provinces.

Tim Shipton is the president of the Alberta Enterprise Group, which is a member-based non-profit business advocacy organization. AEG members employ more than 150,000 Canadians across all sectors of the Canadian economy.

PFT: Belichick reportedly 'hates' Tebow as a player

West Virginia v TexasGetty Images

As Jets quarterback Geno Smith prepares for his first series of NFL practice sessions at the team?s rookie minicamp, one of the guys who presided over the offensive practices at Smith?s most recent stop is defending Smith from criticism.

?I never got the sense he was a diva or pampered or anything in my involvement with him,? West Virginia offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson told Brian Costello of the New York Post. ?I never had one problem with him other than he watched too much film.?

Before the draft, Nolan Nawrocki of Pro Football Weekly skewered Smith.? After the draft, Yahoo! Sports and ESPN.com published critical quotes from anonymous sources regarding Smith.

?He?s going to play for a long time,? Dawson said this week. ?I think the Jets are going to be more than happy that they have him.? He?s going to work his [butt] off. It?s almost a positive for the Jets organization because if everything would have went smooth and he had been picked in the top five he probably wouldn?t be as motivated as he is right now.

?In my talks with him after the draft, he?s so fired up right now to prove this [jerk] wrong that he?s going to work and do it.?

Compounding Smith?s problems is that his camp didn?t launch an aggressive counterattack in response to Nawrocki?s scathing scouting report.? And with Smith firing his agents only days after the draft, he had no one in place to attempt to change the narrative and alter the perception arising from the Yahoo! Sports and ESPN reports.

Perception in this context is key.? His reported plan to leave the draft (ESPN reported it, Smith has denied it) after the first night fueled the perception that he can?t handle adversity, for those who already believed that.? His decision to fire his agents in the wake of the draft fueled the perception that he?s inclined to externalize blame.

In fact, we?ve (I?ve) been criticized, primarily by those who tend to look for reasons to criticize us (me), for pointing out the connection between Smith?s reported plan to leave the draft and the reaction from those who already have a dim view of him.

It?s a reasonable at worst, dead-on 100-percent accurate at best interpretation of the impact of the behavior on the opinions of those who believe the negative things reported about Smith.? Those who think I?m biased against Smith, who played college football at West Virginia University, apparently aren?t aware of my Mountaineer connection.? (I grew up in West Virginia, went to law school in Morgantown, live 30 miles from the school, and attended every home football game that I can.)

What I wrote about Smith after the first round of the draft contained the same advice I would have given Smith if he were my client, friend, cousin, nephew, or son.

Good advice is what he and every young player (and every young person) needs.? Here?s hoping that Geno Smith gets it from everyone around him, and that he heeds it.
