The rebooting of Atlantic City?s casino restaurant industry ? now decidedly tilted toward casual upscale fare ? which began with the purchase of the then Trump Marina (now Golden Nugget) by Landry?s Inc. and continued via the recent addition of Resorts? new Jimmy Buffet-themed food enterprises, will officially reach a crescendo on Thursday, July 11.?

On that day, Tropicana Casino & Resort will unveil the most ambitious restaurant expansion this town has seen in a great many years, as six separate eateries make their debut at the same time.?

Never mind that most, if not all of them, have already begun ?de rigeur? or ?soft? openings, designed to work the kinks out in their operations. Starting Thursday at 11am, Tropicana management has planned a series of festivities designed to welcome the newcomers (see sidebar.)?

The grandest of which is easily Chickie?s & Pete?s, spanning across two floors and devouring a whopping 16,000 square feet. Visitors will encounter three separate bars ? one fronting the gaming floor, another called ?Play2? that is nicely tucked away and available for private events, and a third that is a soaring, central construct overlooking the Boardwalk.?

Chickie?s & Pete?s president/CEO Pete Ciarrocchi tells us the new venture is the second-largest in his empire, dwarfed only by the mammoth South Philly location in the heart of the Philadelphia sports complex district built in 1998 (the original Chickie?s & Pete?s was a small Northeast Philly taproom dating back to 1977.?

Making this outlet different and regionally authentic are several products specifically sourced from Jersey shore providers; clams by Brigantine?s Clam Daddy fisheries and local Cape May salt oysters.?

?What we do best is shellfish, and the taste of a hard-shell crab next to the ocean is different than on Frankford Avenue [in Philadelphia,]? says Ciarrocchi. ?

There?s even a proprietary house libation, Crabby Ale, crafted by Downingtown?s well-regarded Victory Brewing Company and whose flavor profile Ciarrocchi describes as ?a high-pitched ale with crab spices.? We counted no fewer than two dozen beers and ales on tap, particularly in the Play2 sports bar.?

The overall Play2 concept looks pretty cool too, as rented ?amusement pod? units enable customers to create their own interactive entertainment, including sports or military gaming and the highly popular ?Dance Revolution,? thereby literally allowing participants to ?become one? with the sport or activity through interactive video. ?

Within The Quarter itself, where Red Square once stood, is Broadway Burger Bar and Grill, owned by the ARK Restaurant organization. Atlantic City earns the distinction of being the company?s second location, after a Las Vegas outlet sited in the New York-New York Hotel-Casino. Burgers are available with an array of more than 15 toppings, and intrepid carnivores must consider challenging the house specialty ?Hub Cap,? reasonably priced at a dollar for every one of its colossal 24 ounces.?
