Just a few minutes at any of Macau?s baccarat tables is enough to spot that something doesn?t quite add up. Even on a relatively low-stakes table, $1,000 hands are common. The problem is that, mainland Chinese are allowed to bring only $5,000 (?3,000) each into the world?s biggest gaming hub. Any wanting to gamble more (which is almost everyone) has to move funds in.

There are many mechanisms to make that possible. At the low end are watch shops that allow a gambler to point to a $10,000 timepiece, pay with a mainland debit card and receive local cash instead
