Samsung Galaxy Grand mid-range 5-inch smartphone revealed

Samsung has revealed the Samsung Galaxy Grand - a mid-range smartphone with a 5-inch display.

Over on the official Samsung blog, a post has been made detailing the new Samsung Galaxy Grand. Following in the footsteps of the hugely successful Samsung Galaxy Note 2, the Samsung Galaxy Grand will feature a large 5-inch display.

The rest of its specs, though, are decidedly mid-range.

While the Android Jelly Bean-powered Samsung Galaxy Grand's 5-inch screen may be big, it certainly isn't sharp by today's standards. With an 800 x 480 resolution stretched over that larger-than-usual slab of glass, it produces just 187ppi.

To put that into context, the original Samsung Galaxy Note with its slightly larger screen (5.3-inch) produces 285ppi.

Underneath this chunky display lies a 1.2GHz dual-core CPU - a spec that would have been considered leading edge in 2011, and is comfortably mid-range now at the end of 2012.

Around back the Samsung Galaxy Grand boasts an 8-megapixel camera, while the front-facing unit is a 2-megapixel unit. There'll be 8GB of internal storage on which to store all your pictures, videos and apps, and there's also a microSD slot for expansion purposes.

With a thickness of 9.6mm and a weight of 162g, the Samsung Galaxy Grand should be relatively easy to wield for a device this size.

Interestingly, the Samsung Galaxy Grand will ship in two models - one single SIM, the other dual SIM for juggling more than one phone account.

There's no price or release date information on the Samsung Galaxy Grand as yet, but expect it to be an affordable entry point to the world of phablets.
