Do You Have Flat Feet? | Footnotes - by Lamey Wellehan Shoes

Flat Feet is a fairly generic term that means your feet don?t have a normally functioning arch when standing.? Without an effective arch, feet lose support and can cause fatigue or even pain.? During the days of Selective Service, it was possible to be rejected from the military for having flat feet.? In 1917, one report showed that of the 2,510,000 men brought before medical examiners for the Draft, 730,000 (29 percent) were rejected on physical grounds.? The malady that was most common was pes planus, or flat feet.?? The reason was that combat forces had to move great distances each day, carrying a load of forty pounds or more on their backs.? Soldiers who had flat feet were less able to perform these tasks.

While having flat feet was considered a disability a generation or two ago, today it is not.? In fact, up to one in five people have flat feet and few have pain or complications.? If the foot?s medial arch has lost its effectiveness, there are many ways today to recreate the missing support.? Orthotics or special inserts work well, as do wearing shoes that help control foot motion.

Flat feet are common in infants and toddlers as tendons holding bones together are lose and the joints are flexible.? As children grow older, these tissues tighten and arches develop (usually by the age of 3 or so).? By adulthood, most people have normal arches.? Over time however, tendons can stretch and arches lose their shape and their ability to fully support the body.? The most common symptom is foot fatigue when standing for a long period of time.? Severe cases can cause pain along the inner side of the ankle and even up through the legs, hip and back.

At Lamey Wellehan we have many ways to help flat feet, including insoles from Spenco, accommodative Lynco orthotics from Aetrex and even corrective orthotics from QuadraStep.? If you have foot, leg or back discomfort, you should talk to your doctor.? You may find that properly supporting your feet may be a solution.? The better balanced your body, the less stress will be placed on your body?s joints and muscles.
