Obama Campaigns in Davenport, Iowa

DAVENPORT, Iowa -- President Barack Obama brought his re-election campaign here on Wednesday. With his wife, Michelle Obama, leading the way, the president charmed an estimated crowd of more than 3,000 people in an important swing-state stop.

In a 45-minute speech on the theme of middle-class economic security, the president laid out the differences between his campaign and Republican challenger Mitt Romney on issues from education, Medicare, and the war on terror.

Charm offensive

Before launching into his stump speech, the president was quick to charm the Village of East Davenport crowd. Courting controversy, the president claimed to be the least charismatic member of his family, following his wife Michelle, their daughters Sasha and Malia, dog Bo and the president's mother-in-law Marian Robinson.

Realizing that he had ranked his mother-in-law behind the family pet, the president was quick to change his rankings and won a hearty laugh from the crowd by asking them not to mention his mistake to his mother-in-law.

"That's a choice in this election"

For the most part however, the president was on-point in making clear the differences between himself and Romney. The phrase "That's a choice in this election" became the president's mantra, as he talked about education and the economy.

"I want to make sure we have the best education system in the world. I want to make sure that local school districts can hire more teachers? especially in math and science. I want to make sure, that two million more people can go to community colleges so that they can get trained for the jobs that businesses are hiring for right now and I want to keep pushing our colleges and universities to lower tuition for every young person can afford to get a higher education. That's a choice in this election."

The tacit implication from the president was that under Mitt Romney these same ideas would not be a priority. From there the president continued to the war on terror touting the capture of Osama Bin Laden and the end of the war in Iraq as foreign policy triumphs.

A Democratic stronghold

The large boisterous crowd on hand for the president's campaign rally comes as no surprise. The president won Scott County in 2008 by a wide margin. The area has long been a stronghold for Democrats and is home to a pair of Democratic congressmen, Dave Loebsack and Bruce Braley.
